The corkscrew must showcase the very best in contemporary Italian design as well as look aesthetically pleasing to the consumer. Designing the corkscrew around an Italian woman should provide a ‘tongue and cheek’ product that will represent playfulness, whilst bringing out the childish side in the user. Its form will directly impact the overall performance and quality of the product. A more premium yet still effective appearance will carry a higher price because of its unique characteristics (for example a female figure). The products size must conform to relevant anthropometric data in order to be able to fit into the average person’s hand. The end product needs to have an ergonomic design that allows it to be easy as well as safe to use. The consumer will require a corkscrew that will suit a variety of environments from a kitchen to a restaurants. The corkscrews design needs to reflect luxury Italian design as this is why customers purchase Alessi. This product is expected to comply with all Quality Control regulations for the country’s the product is sold in. In this case the product is expected to meet the certificate of Europe in order for it to be on sale in the UK. The appearance of the product is directly correlated to its performance as consumers are purchasing design over function. The corkscrew also needs to be engineered to be made out of durable materials in order to give it longevity, as this will show off quality and prove it is worth its more premium price point. The product is required to be handheld, therefore it must be light-weight. In addition to this the corkscrews purpose is to open bottles hence why it must be waterproof along with nontoxic (No volatile organic compounds in the finish). The corkscrew must be easily cleanable (Low surface tension in the finish) as it will be constantly exposed to various chemicals. As well as this the corkscrew must be able to withstand hot environments (commercial kitchens) along with occasional drops on the floor.
