Do engineers have a responsibility to ensure that designs are aesthetically pleasing and environmentally acceptable as well as functional?
A sustainable project has many benefits and allows Civil Engineers to take responsibly to make sure that what they build and design is not only functional, but is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly. The land can be occupied by wildlife, people, building or other structures so Engineers have to make sure that disturbance to each is kept to a minimum. This means that project has to be sustainable. The Definition of Sustainability. (2016).
The United Kingdom has many laws and regulations that Civil Engineers adhere to. These rules and regulations carry heavy fines and sometimes even jail time if broken.
2010 to 2015 government policy: environmental quality - GOV.UK. (2015).
Therefore, many companies have an ‘Environmental Policy Act’ which highly affects civil engineers. This is a written commitment that states what the company does to aim for a sustainable project. The Act encompasses many task such as;
- Minimising waste from the project, as excess waste leads to accumulation and can cause many harmful side effects to both people and the environment.
- Minimise toxic emissions and dust, as they have serious consequences to the well being of people and wildlife.

This one of the big ways to have a massive effect on their GHG report. Also by minimising the amount green house gasses they emit they can apply for a bigger ‘European Union Emission Trading Scheme’ permit or for a cheaper price.

Even though the penalties are extensive they should not be the main reasons for why we adhere to UK’s strict environmental laws. This is because Civil Engineers have a responsibility to both the community and the environment to design and build without any damage to either parties for the benefits of everyone’s future.
For engineers, no matter what the circumstances they have must take responsibility for the project to ensure that the project is not only both functional and aesthetically pleasing but is environmentally friendly.
