Could the World be filled with “Superhumans”?
Upon hearing the word “superhuman” my mind immediately conjures up a being with inhuman like qualities and superpowers- typically, I imagine the comic book mutants from X-Men. With modern technology and advancements in genetics, the idea of a superhuman is becoming more and more plausible, although do not expect to see Magneto causing chaos in the street anytime soon. A superhuman can be defined as a human with heightened intelligence and physical characteristics that separate them from the typical average human. For example, a superhuman may be slightly taller, faster, or even better looking than that of a typical human. The majority of the public has heard the sensationalism surrounding the idea of designer babies. A superhuman and designer baby are very similar and often almost interchangeably used, as they both involve the specific choosing and tailoring of certain genes that lead to an expression of qualities. Most people think that designer babies seem like an idea for science

One controversial topic that provokes debate is genetic modification. In the essay “Proposed Treatment to Fix Genetic Diseases Raises Ethical issues” the author Rob Stein explains the process of genetic engineering and suggests a solution. The government is debating if the should let scientists “make changes in some of the genetic material” in the egg so the baby will not have certain genes. The main goal is to “help women deliver healthy, normal children.” There are some risks with this process such as birth defects.…

Eugenics: Argument FOR by May Slaughter Human genome editing enhances humans with desirable traits, either known as positive or negative eugenics, possible. Eugenics was coined by Sir Francis Galton, cousin of Darwin, in 1883. 19th century Britain looked down upon anyone, of the lower class. They had planned on sterilizing all of the following: mental illness, alcoholism, criminality, chronic poverty, blindness, deafness, feeble-mindedness, and prostitutes. Along with Galton, Hitler has also given people a bad opinion of eugenics.…

SUMMARY/PRECIS Professor Ronald Green of Dartmouth University, in his article, Building Baby from Genes Up, addresses the topic of whether or not genetic engineering is a viable technological advancement for our society to pursue and argues that although there are many potential drawbacks, the overall benefits of genetic engineering outweigh its downfalls. He supports this claim by addressing the variety of benefits that genetic engineering can offer, then by categorically refuting counterarguments and finally by presenting his opinion for why each downfall of genetic engineering is surmountable. Green’s purpose is to shed light on both sides of the argument when it comes to genetic engineering, while posing the idea that genetic engineering…

Could you imagine a world where we could create a better race of humans? I think that designer babies are an efficient way to create a better society where a smarter race of humans can rule, he world and we can make the world a better place. In the article “In Praise of Designer Babies” it says “Imagine you knew that you carried a gene for a debilitating illness. But doctors could go into your egg (or your spouse's) and remove that gene, enabling you to have a baby who, whatever other problems they might encounter through their lifetime, wouldn't have to worry about the illness.…

We get most of our traits from our parents and grandparents, whether it 's how we look or how we act. We also obtain disease and cancers from our descendent 's, but with the advancement of science, we may be able to make those unwanted genes to go away. In Ateequllah Hayat 's article "Can You Turbo-charge Your Genes to Produce Designer Babies?" (2016), describes epigenetics which is the study of how our genes are able to be altered by external factors and that we have to become more aware of this idea. His claim is backed up by examples of epigenetics ans how its beneficial to society. Hayat 's purpose of the article is to let people in the science community and families know that research of something that is able to change the world is being…

Therefore I did my research and chose this topic in order to get a better knowledge about a technology that will change the world in the future. There were a few things I had in mind before I started my research and acquired better knowledge about my topic. When we’re talking about human genome we’re talking about genes that are responsible for everything that is visible (hair, eye color, height…

Having a baby that you can design that's pretty amazing except there are some coincidences. There's many reasons why it's good to have a designer baby. You can design your baby to have a different eye color than the mom or dad even the same hair color too. The baby can me born to have no disabilities or any diseases. For instance, if there's a woman who can't have any children she can create her own baby but she will have to find a carrier and her and her spouse may have to pay a lot of money for those couple of things to be done.…

While this technology certainly helped spark the ethical debates concerning genome editing, it failed to yield an affordable and efficient means of editing human DNA. While there were many other gene editing inventions that dabbled in the field for the next couple of decades, it was not until 2012 that the reality of its feasibility truly became apparent. It was the “clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats,” and a nuclease that it utilizes, Cas9, (or CRISPR-Cas9 for short) that brought the conversation about gene editing back with vigor. Whether or not humanity has been able to agree on the use of gene editing, it has already proven successful in treating humans in a few extreme cases. Not only was the ability to edit human genes brought back to the forefront of conversation, but the disputes that lie among it were resurrected as well.…

My novel this semester, Jessica Brody’s Unforgotten, is about a girl from the future named Sera, who had escaped to the past in an attempt to evade agents of the company that created her. She is the prototype for artificially-created humans but disliked her life and ran away, and the company wants her back. While such technology as that which is needed to generate a complete being is still far off in our present, scientists are already making progress and discovering more about this field. Many similarities between this fictitious world and our own can be seen, as exemplified by the article “Scientists Debate How Far To Go In Editing Human Genes”, by Rob Stein. Primarily notable are the logistical and physical parallels between the technologies.…

condition or disease to humans. As defective genes are replaced with functional genes, then it is expected that there will be a reduction in genetic diversity and if human beings have identical genomes, the population as a whole will be susceptible to viruses and many forms of disease.” (Prata) Added to this important concern is a realization of humans’ capacity to simply change their minds. In his article, “The Case Against Human Gene Editing,” in 2015 Brendan Foht pointed out the future possibility that “there might be some wisdom in the view that it is morally wrong to genetically design our children, or that some future ‘consensus’ that we come to hold as our ‘societal views evolve’ might be foolish and misguided” (Foht).…

While the idea of creating an artificial child may seem immoral, there are more advantages to designer babies than just eliminating disabilities. In addition to creating a fairer environment for all children, this procedure could also make them live longer with the discarding of disease causing genes. Furthermore, the newfound experience and data collected from this procedure could also help geneticists progress faster in their research in genetics. The operation could be also viewed as ethically accepted since some women take prenatal pills during pregnancy to ensure…

Designer babies can almost be compared to robots. They are all designed to do and perform the same way and this may be the result in designing children. This will affect biodiversity and affect the child’s freedom because the child will never have the chance to be their own individual. “Moreover, the diversity of the gene pool and human genetics will be affected, and this may even lead to a major percentage of the human race being wiped out completely by some major disease” (Buzzle.com, 2011, Designer para. 6).…
