The Negative Effects Of Designer Babies

Superior Essays
Imagine yourself going to your doctor’s office to get checked up; she hands you a papers and you start checking off what you want green eyes, blond hair, artistic, female and so on. Just like getting to build your own Barbie doll. Congratulations, you’ve designed your image of a perfect child. Parents have the tendency to want what is best for their children. They want them to be in a perfect condition. Designer babies have become a solution, to create something perfect. Even though designer babies can be used to create a parent’s perfect child, many still have concerns. Designer babies can either be helpful or harmful; however, research has only shown designer babies having negative effects on our society and major risk factors on a child …show more content…
However, In the process of creating a designer baby unwanted embryos are destroyed and the technology used is not risk free. "One way to make a designer baby begins with an embryo created by in vitro fertilization (IVF). Genetic engineers modify the embryo’s DNA and then introduce it into a womb (Agar 1)." Agar states that just the IVF cost at least $2500. This process was originally used for a couple that could not have a child on their own. Now this process is used to create a couples perfect child, also known as a designer baby. In order to create a designer baby, a couple must go through the process on in vitro fertilization to create twelve embryos that will be tested. The unethical part of this process is the death or destruction of the unwanted eleven embryos. It is immoral to destroy eleven potential babies. However one may choice to continue the process thinking that there are no risks. Some may argue that the technology and methods have been already tested on mice proving that process is successful. A study on mice was done showing that by adding an additional copy of the gene the mouse, Doggie, was able to learn faster and retain more information for a longer period of time. Even thought the technique worked on the mice it was never tested on humans. A safety concern is that one gene has more than one effect. “There is evidence for such effects on Doogie mice, which seem not only to have improved powers of learning and memory, but also to have a greater sensitivity to pain, an enhancement of more dubious desirability (2)." This causes some uncertainty because by effecting one gene for the better the same gene can cause pain or unwanted traits. This makes the technology is not advance enough to be used on humans. Due to these uncontrollable factors that can be caused from the gene manipulation and altering the traits to make a perfect child it is immoral to

Could you imagine a world where we could create a better race of humans? I think that designer babies are an efficient way to create a better society where a smarter race of humans can rule, he world and we can make the world a better place. In the article “In Praise of Designer Babies” it says “Imagine you knew that you carried a gene for a debilitating illness. But doctors could go into your egg (or your spouse's) and remove that gene, enabling you to have a baby who, whatever other problems they might encounter through their lifetime, wouldn't have to worry about the illness.…

We get most of our traits from our parents and grandparents, whether it 's how we look or how we act. We also obtain disease and cancers from our descendent 's, but with the advancement of science, we may be able to make those unwanted genes to go away. In Ateequllah Hayat 's article "Can You Turbo-charge Your Genes to Produce Designer Babies?" (2016), describes epigenetics which is the study of how our genes are able to be altered by external factors and that we have to become more aware of this idea. His claim is backed up by examples of epigenetics ans how its beneficial to society. Hayat 's purpose of the article is to let people in the science community and families know that research of something that is able to change the world is being…

With the advancements made in technology daily and new scientific studies and explorations, the science community is always on the brink of something big. And the next big thing might be designer babies. Deeper and more profound exploration into cells and genetics have allowed for the possibility of designer babies to emerge. Before creating designer babies was even an idea, scientists were first working towards sequencing the human genome. By sequencing the human genome, scientists will be able to identify which nucleotide sequences code for which genes.…

Having a baby that you can design that's pretty amazing except there are some coincidences. There's many reasons why it's good to have a designer baby. You can design your baby to have a different eye color than the mom or dad even the same hair color too. The baby can me born to have no disabilities or any diseases. For instance, if there's a woman who can't have any children she can create her own baby but she will have to find a carrier and her and her spouse may have to pay a lot of money for those couple of things to be done.…

Is it okay to allow parents to pick and choose how their child should look, as if they are in Build-a Bear Workshop? Scientists in today’s modern world have made immense progress in the field of genetic engineering. Many have rightfully chided scientists and this new development of errant technology due to the unethical consequences that genetic alteration of children brings. One of those consequences is that a society gap will arise from the manipulation of an embryo’s genes. Additionally, a child’s consent will be to be ignored if their genes are altered without consent.…

In a study conducted by Princeton University involving mice, it showed that while scientists were able to genetically modify mice to be able to retain information for longer, these mice were more sensitive to pain, a sign that the intelligence genes may be linked to sensitivity. All this goes to show that scientists barely understand genes, and may never truly understand this complex concept, and therefore should not be practicing it yet, or even ever, in order to prevent more unnecessary killing of embryos, or failures. Another reason why designer babies have no history of success is because of the lack of research, they have an extremely high failure rate. 15-24% of IVF pregnancies resulted in miscarriages and only 21.1 IVF births were successful…

“Designer Babies” is a layman’s term used to describe what is known in the medical field as genetically engineered of human gametes, zygotes and embryos also known as germ line modification, (Wikipedia). There are countless problems surrounding designer babies, an example being a gene does not code just for one function, thus a gene medication can be used to solve a problem while it causes another problem involuntarily, (world press 2013, April 28). People have questions about this process such as; is designing a baby ethical? Then there are problems attached to this process that give rise to questions that are impossible to answer, such as; If the process were made acceptable and ethical by members of society and would the parent be modifying only for medical purposes or in hopes to have the most “perfect baby”, (Debate.org).…

The question of “designer babies” is one that is fairly recent and controversy of the topic starts from the very definition of the term. When one is presented with the term “designer babies”, Most people imagine a genetically engineered being who is less human and more technology. This false stigma mainly comes from the negative reputation of Genetically modified species such as food or animals. However, the reality is quite different, it can be argued that even choosing a fertilised cell as an embryo during IVF is a form of a designer baby. After conducting a questionnaire; 86.76% of people believed a “designer baby” was a being which was genetically engineered to have selective traits.…

To begin with, the technology used is not one hundred percent safe, and the embryo could accidentally be destroyed during the procedure. Along with the dangers of the death of the embryo, designer babies could gain an unfair advantage in the society with the modification of genes to be more advantageous mentally and externally. This could also create societies between designer and non-designer babies. In reality, these groups are already shown between the rich and the poor; the procedure would not be cheap as well, which could also create problems. Although I do not agree with the use of this technology for these aesthetic purposes, it would most likely be used under the table; even if there was a law against…
