Prevailing Mishap
Everyone in life has different types of adversity from sports injuries to a bad breakup; challenges come in all types and in all magnitudes. Adversity is when someone goes through hardships. Those who conquer adversity often acquire the following traits: strength, optimism, versatility, and courageousness. Overcoming adversity is diverse for everyone; the following people took big risks in facing difficulties; Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Yoshiko Uchida and Kris Carr, a wellness activist and a cancer survivor, and they were all successful in doing so.

Yoshika Uchida is a women who was ripped away from her home, her school and everything she has ever know, all because of her race. Yoshika Uchida and her family were taken from their home and put into camp that segregated the Japanese-American race from the rest of America. This happened because of the attack by the Japanese empire that happened at Pearl Harbor; Roosevelt believed that the race was going to sabotage and cause more damage to America. The Japanese-Americans and the Uchida family were versatile and optimistic while facing these hardships. They had hope that one day they will be able to go back home and go back to their everyday lives. In her memoir, from Desert Exile: The Uprooting of a Japanese-American family, Uchida states “ The stall was lying on the floor, Dust, dirt and wood shaving …manure covered boards,… the whitened corpse of many insects still clung to the hastily whitewashed walls.” Uchida is describing the poor conditions of the place they were to call home from now on. The government rushed into putting the apartments together, when they could have waited a couple more days to make it a more livable environment (Uchida 302). Towards the end of the memoir, Uchida starts being more optimistic about the camp. Uchida states how the food starts to improve and how the families make the stables more comfortable to live in. She started writing and published a book called Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips. She also wrote two other books: Crazy Sexy Cancer Survivor: More Rebellion and Fire for Your Healing Journey (Stein). She inspired people with her books and her film. Carr gave hope to people struggling with the same issue she was. It made people believe that nothing can hold someone back, regardless of what it is. Carr never believed she would get married or find love with her diagnosis but she was wrong. Kris Carr says that her cancer led her to love; while filming her documentary she fell in love with the film producer, Brain Fassett. They ended up getting married in 2006, she describes this as “the happiest day of my life” (Stein). Even though she found out she had life threating disease; she did not let that stop her, she defeated adversity and became a successful wellness activist and writer. She achieved accomplishments that she never thought she would be able to do. It was important to Kris Carr to overcome this because she wanted to create awareness for people struggling with cancer, awareness for people just like
