People are always making jokes about racism, trying to make it into something funny but really isn’t, and over time this has become a cultural normality (sluchinski). Music, especially rap music use a great deal of racial slurs. Rap music, mostly black rap music, is almost to the point where it is based off of racial stereotypes and slurs because they are used so much throughout one three minute song. This type of music is what is affecting this generation now, making them believe it is ok to say racial slurs and stereotypes just to be funny. When a white kid goes up to a black kid singing a song and comes along a racial stereotype towards blacks; the white kid is going to think it’s funny while the black kid may laugh they will feel a bit offended. If the same black kid was to be watching a television show that had racial stereotypes in them, then they would not only think they are funny but also see it as acceptable (francescarizzo1). Some television shows are highly desensitized to racism. As many racist jokes and stereotypes they put in one episode you would think that the producers don’t really care if they offend anybody or not, they’re just looking for ratings and that is it. This is just an example of someone conforming to the normality of using racial stereotypes since, in this generation, is something people love to talk and joke about. Even though people get offended by them, other people are still using them and even the people who get offended have used a racial stereotype against someone. The often use of these stereotypes is just one reminder that racism is still active and not slowing down. People being desensitized to racism is keeping our society stuck in one place because until we can calm down all these racial issues and have all races work together as one, then we can’t move on to bigger and better
