In the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. The author depicts the characters as emotionally desensitized and a lack of sensitivity. The novel takes place in the great depression and illustrates what life was like during the great depression. The novel's two main characters are George and Lennie. George and Lennie are best friends searching to find a job in California. During the Great Depression, it was uncommon for people to travel together. George is the leader of the two of them. This is illustrated throughout the novel on how the characters interact with one and other. This is first illustrated to the reader when Curley is talking to Lennie and says “ well, nex’ time you answer when you’re spoke to.”(26). Curley is being rude and cruel to Lennie because he is trying to act tough to a handicapped person. The many of the characters in the novel go out one night and Lennie, Crooks, Candy, and Curley’s wife left behind. Lennie is talking to crooks and tells Crooks“Ever’ body went into town,”(68). Most of the characters went out to a party, drink beer, and sleep with women. Curley’s wife knows that her husband is cheating on her when she say’s “ Think I don’t know where they all went?”(77). It shows that Curly does not love his wife and is cruel to his wife. The author is illustrating that even married people in the Great Depression did not love each and other because they did not have much to live for.
