In light of the new state mandated desegregation of schools, one local high school is overcoming amazing obstacles. At the beginning of the school year parents and students rioted over the new desegregated school, T.C. William’s High. Instead of educating the students on racial disparity the teachers promoted racial segregation. One teacher admitted placing the “rednecks” and the black students on opposite sides, stationing herself in the middle of the classroom to suppress conflict between the two (Hardie 2013). The advanced classes consisted of 98 percent of middle class white students while the “rednecks”, Hispanics and black students attended the classes that were not big on academics showing the racial disparity in the classrooms. The school furthermore showed disparities handing out tardy slips. The black students were likely to receive a slip for coming to class late, even if entering as the bell’s ringing.…

Desegregation Debacle: The Unintended Consequences of Brown v. Board of Education In the aftermath of the civil war, reform and subsequent legislation were implemented in an attempt to improve equality for blacks. However, these actions failed to leave a lasting improvement in civil rights for African Americans. After the Plessy v. Fergusson decision in 1896, any previous gains were negated when the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of separating peoples by their races provided they were presented with equal facilities. This decision began a period of Jim Crow laws on the basis of separate but equal conditions for blacks and whites.…

The night of September 29, 1962 marked the beginning of The Ole Miss Riot, the culmination of contention between Southern segregationist civilians and federal and state forces. James Meredith’s enrollment at the University of Mississippi at Oxford, Mississippi spurred protest and discontent among Southern segregationists because Meredith was an African American military veteran, and primarily White students attended the University. The United States Supreme Court ruled that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional in the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision. Meredith’s application to the University of Mississippi was supported and legitimized by his strong experience as an Air Force veteran and his previous academic…

Status Quo Paper After the Supreme Court ruling in the case Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka in 1954, the Supreme Court issued a nationwide order deeming organized segregation of schools unconstitutional. When I was listening to the audio “The problem We all Live With” brought be many questions as an American. Growing up we were forced to believe in this ideology that we are all created equal and we are free, but the question is are we? Since, I can remember we have always pledged to the flag of the United States every morning before class started. Just by simply breaking down the words on the pledge of allegiances we can analyze the meaning of those words. The pledge allegiances states that “ I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all”.…

The reason the assistant coach was asked to lose the game was because the community wasn’t accepting of the idea that a team with different races could be undefeated. The people who were in control of the sports administration at the school tried to blackmail the assistant coach by saying if he didn’t lose the game he would no longer be eligible to be put into the hall of fame at the school. The assistant coach considered making the team lose, but then he thought it through and came to the conclusion that he should try his best to make the team win even though it might not be helping him. This essay showed how racism was a major theme throughout the movie “Remember The Titans”.…

Prom is recognized as one the most memorable moments in an individual’s high school career. It entails a night of enjoyment and memories with other senior peers that will last a lifetime. No matter an individual's race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation, prom is an event where all students come together despite their differences, as it one of the last formal events to spend with friends before class members pursue their own endeavours. However, in numerous southern states, Jim Crow laws continue to prevail, and the suggestion of a desegregated prom can be likened to taking away American’s second amendment right to bear arms.…
