I remember sitting in a surrounded by a sea of new faces; We sat in groups of four at our respective tables. The room was dark and the only source of light came from a projector. On the projector, I read “intro to typography” in bold typeface. There was slight murmuring going on all around me but was finally pulled to a hush when our instructor walked in. He’s the kinda guy that doesn’t have a huge tolerance for nonsense and whining kids. Thankfully for him (and me), this group didn’t consist of any. My instructor looked from his to his right and said, “Alright knuckled heads; listen up!” immediately the remaining voices of idle chit-chat dispersed until there was nothing but silence. I saw him lift his raise his arm and point at the projector where the type was. “Intro to Typography. Practice it, learn it and respect it because you’ll be stuck doing this for the next couple of weeks.” throughout the rooms, I could hear silent murmuring going on mixed in with a few …show more content…
After a few days, our next assignment was given to us. He wanted for us to design a mock webpage. After looking over the rubric, I was a bit intimidated. Some of the few things that needed to be thought of were layout, colors, structure, flow and so on and so forth. Sitting down at my work desk, I proceeded to sketch up a sea of thumbnails for my project. The overall idea was to create a clean and simple design that’s minimalist to the eyes for a fake company. Simple, right? Not even close! My work station looked like one of those cliche brainstorming scenes you’d see in a movie. At the end of it all, I finally had a solid concept laid out. For my idea, It was going to have a bold sans-serif font to capture your attienton that’s paired with a tiny serif font for easy readability. The structure for the body of text was gonna be an easy-to-follow layout with a sharp color

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

His eyes brushed down a list of names quickly and came to a sudden halt. With a glance toward me, he called me to the front of the room to present my work from the day before. And then it wasn't just him and me, it was him and me and every other sharp-faced person in the room. They were experienced "AP students," the best of the best, I was a mere peasant in their presence. Reluctantly, I made my way to the front of the room and with an unsure hand slid my work under the projector screen.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

Because of a five paragraph paper I had to write in this class, I learned that writing is never as bad as I think it will be. At first, I thought IEW’s curriculum was hard and boring. Of course, as a ten year old I didn't see when I’d ever need to write a long essay about a certain topic when I could just talk about it. When I’d get sent home with a three paragraph paper on some historical topic due then next week, I didn’t ever look forward to it.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

Growing up with catholic education, I was primarily taught the importance of reading and writing. The generic hamburger 5-paragraph essay format was on our 10 commandments of writing and so was the idea of a minimum 6-8 sentences per paragraph. Entering high school English class, I found myself in a different situation than most typical high school students. My school offered International Baccalaureate English classes; these classes were structured differently than that of AP or Standard English. In this class, we were left to fend on our own.…

Prior to English 101, I have been taking several English classes, but each class helped me little by little to an English 101 student. Learning to have efficient studying habits such as study the day of the class and not doing things last minute. Also learning how to actually study other subjects and how to think critically. This has increased my learning habits. My student habits have changed dramatically,…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…

When I was young I was never the best at reading even though my parents owned many books and magazines that they read on a daily basis. My mother enjoyed reading her gossip magazines that she would receive in the mail once a month and my father had a whole bookshelf full of history books. My parents would always encourage me to read the books I would check out at the school library to improve my reading and writing but that advice usually went in through one ear and out the other. The only books I would really attempt to read had to be humorous or horrifying, my favorites were the Goosebumps collection. I loved reading these books alone in my room where I couldn’t be sidetracked by all the commotion that went on in my house.…
