As I sat there on the brink of a steep jagged cliff looking upon the vast landscape, that practically seemed boundless. I felt the crisp breeze brush across my face. Taking a deep breath in I could feel it run through my nose, down my throat and inflate my lungs. A cooling sensation. Leaving my mind vacant but with an almost eerie awareness. There was something about the unknown that lies among the terrain. Something about knowing that I did not know, and that I will never know.
But at the same time it had given me an impression of tranquility and serenity, knowing that it did not matter, and that it does not affect me in this moment, nor will it ever. The feeling of how nothing in this world mattered besides that moment between me and the land. I could sense the chilled ground beneath me, the grass, rough and shaggy, much like uncombed hair. Unkempt. I could see the wind blow through the tufts of grass, creating ripples much like when a pebble is thrown into a calm body of water. Slowly but surely making its way through.

Ragged looking, as if it were the rubble of a destroyed building. Sprinkled throughout it were branches washed ashore. Their fate only to be swallowed up and spit out. It was such a beautiful contrast to the sea of grey that engulfed them. It illuminated the deep amber colours of the branches. Especially on the ones that still had their leaves attached to them, just clinging to life. Alongside the beach was a piercing cerulean blue body of water, a colour so deep yet lively. I could only imagine how it looked undisturbed by the wind. Even when it was gusting over the water creating rapid whitecaps that were ubiquitous. It was still so peaceful. It was bewildering how something so violent could be so

While passage one by N.S. Momaday creates a nostalgic and appreciative tone with the implementation of heavy imagery, elaborate sentences, and precise diction in order to explain the magnitude and the appearance of the landscape, passage two by D. Brown establishes a cryptic and melancholy tone with employment of rich imagery, compound sentences, and descriptive diction, with the intention to explain a cynical attitude towards what has happened to the plains. Although both passages employ approximately the same methods to achieve their purpose, the authors’ purposes are different. Even though the two authors may describe the exact same landscape, both of them have different viewpoints on the landscape in order to achieve their own intentions.…

However, Brown uses unpleasant diction to describe the land loss. His choice of diction is opposite from the colorful one Momaday uses. The passage is liveliness and very dull when describing the plains. Brown uses words such as “metallic sky” and “parched.” When writing about the land he says,”..endless desolation of bones and skulls and rotting hooves.”…

The fog still hung over the earth like a blanket, and the light was still as if I was in a dream. As I walked on the pebbles, I heard the gurgle of the sea washing back over the pebbles. When I took my shoes off to feel the frigid water, I felt the stony pebbles shift underneath my bare feet. When I reached the water, it was cold as ice. As the ocean rushed towards me, I felt it’s power emanating from just the frigid water that I was standing in.…

As I woke up, I felt a warm, humid breeze trying to smother my face. At first I thought it was just a little air ventilating through my room but then I remembered that it was winter back home and the air was almost always cold. Upon, realizing this, I opened my eyes cautiously and looked around. I was covered by lush soft golden grass, feeling too comfortable I rolled onto my back and stretched.…

Ralph picked up his stick and prepared for battle. But what could they do? It would take them a week to break a path through the thicket; and anyone who wormed his way in would be helpless. He felt the point of his spear with his thumb and grinned without amusement. Whoever tried that would be stuck, squealing like a pig.…

White, fluffy clouds drifted across the sky. The sun shone brilliantly and the water in the pond glittered when the sun's rays hit the shifting waters. It was hard to believe that the night before last the sky above was full of tumultuous, dark rigged clouds. Which caused a down pool of rain. She closed her eyes taking in a breath of fresh air.…

My bare feet smoldered into the grass, I reached out and touched the wispy white cloud in front of me. My hands melted into it as if it were a pillow, a large pillow with never-ending fluff. I clawed the cloud with my hand and threw myself into the soft heap and I drown myself in. “Welcome abroad to the Destiny’s Bounty, please stay seated the entire time and enjoy the ride.” said a woman as if she were singing a lullaby.…

This dream is for romantics and lovers. Certainly the dream isn’t the sum of the colorful patterns of Hawaiian shirts, coconut bras and grass skirts alone. It’s not in the Pina Colada, or the Surfer on Acid. The boutiques of Waikiki teeming with Japanese tourists, those we can ignore all together, laugh at their circumstance. The accoutrements of hustle and bustle such as these have all been and will continue to be part of the Great Marketing image of a Paradise, and everyday life grows like fruit bearing vines in the cracks of the pavement; an American, homogenized culture sitting heavy like cheap fried food in the belly.…

The trees are tall and healthy like they're in the prime of their life. The fruits were popping out of the trees as if they were asking to be eating. The water is an elegant shade of blue, and the waves come in the beach repeatedly throwing forgotten objects on the beach side. The sky's marvelous color matched the ocean’s and the enlarged and puffy clouds made the scene resemble a portrait or a paradise of some…

As I stroll along the beach I can feel the smooth, damp sand beneath my feet. I am taken in by the soothing atmosphere that encircles me. As I watch the foreboding clouds approach and the wind whipping the tops of the towering pines, I huddled beneath a sturdy bush. The celerity of the currents increased rapidly and it looked as if the smallest of the waves were topped with white caps. The thick bush did not shield me from the thrashing sprays of the river. As the winds accelerated, I heard a sudden crash and the ground beneath my wet paws rumbled. I was overcome with a wave of fear and curiosity as I went to see what had made the sudden crash upon the ground and find a fallen pine tree.…

When you are swimming, it is much harder to remember and do all of these things without getting exhausted, and divisions is where it is really put to the test. With each movement I can feel the water flowing around and through my body, its coldness causing goosebumps to form on my arms and legs. While swimming, I get kicked by other swimmers on accident, and sometimes these kicks leave bright red splotches on my thighs. My skin tightens in the water as it dries up, creating raisin-like wrinkles of my finger and my toes, which only fade hours after the meet. My goggles are tight around my head, and squeezing harshly under my eyebrows and on top of my cheekbones, leaving red indents on my face, and creating a pain that surrounds my head from the tension of the string and rubber.…
