Descriptive Narrative: A Week That Truly Changed My Life
This past summer, I had the honor and privilege to attend the American Legion Boys State of Kansas Leadership Academy. Boys State is an interactive experience that is a simulation of state government, which develops self-purpose and promotes respect for American politics. At the beginning of the week I was introduced to some of the most motivated high school juniors in Kansas that I knew nothing about. At the end of the week I left with friendships that will last me a lifetime. Kansas Boys State taught me how the state government functions.
As I drove from Hutchinson to Manhattan Sunday morning, many unanswered questions were flooding my mind. Did I pack enough or not enough? What do I do when I get there? Where do I park my car? The

Everyone in the media department had to prepare questions for the debate. In this debate the Federalists battled against the Nationalists in McCain auditorium in front of all of the staters. When it was time for the debate I was nervous for the Federalist candidates. After the debate, the candidate’s campaigning ended and I went to cast my vote. I was relieved to hear that the Federalist Party had won the debate. It was the first completely Federalist group to be put into office since 2011.
Throughout the rest of the week it was quite the learning experience. Being apart of the media department was stressful but enjoyable. Sometimes I would stay up till 2:00 am to finish writing editorials, which needed to be finished to be published for the Staters Union Newspaper the next morning. Even though I was the last one in bed it gave me a sense of accomplishment. Those nights I slept like a baby even with my firm mattress. Attending press conferences was another learning experience. I had to ask detailed questions about policy issues and other problems either on local or state

During the last week of my junior year, I attended South Dakota's Boy's State. For me this was an interesting experience because for the first time I was surrounded not only by the brightest students in my school, but the best and brightest from the entire state. Overall, this was an eye-opening experience because everyone attending had thoughts to contribute to running our own state. Those who became involved had their own personal perspective that was shaped by the social, economic, and geographical characteristics of their home region. The most intriguing aspect of the week had nothing to do with actual government policy.…

First, it separated me from my peers for a time which helped demonstrate to me and them that things were changing. Second, it gave me some hands on training with an experienced supervisor. I was given some established measuring and tracking tools to help me evaluate my team’s performance. I was also given several opportunities to take training courses during my first year in leadership. Perhaps the most important thing for me was my having a mentor to help me understand the impact my promotion would have on my relationships with my peers.…

As I reflect on the extracurricular activities that I was a part of during my high school years, one program stands out above the rest—Arkansas Boys State. Going into the program, I was unsure of how the program would benefit me as a senior in high school. I did not have any interest in politics, nor did I want to learn about it. I was the only student from my school who attended Boys State. I was surrounded by seniors of the same level of intellect, and I was very intimidated.…

I was 23 before I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. As far back as Elementary school I knew that there was something “off” in the way that I processed information. That my ability to do well academically was somehow hindered by not having certain tools that I needed, tools I wasn’t even aware existed. In high school, I began to augment my deficits with strengths. Where my grades were lacking I made up for it through creativity; I excelled at art and photography.…

The aroma of uncertainty surrounded the paramedics in the helicopter. The twenty-minute ride felt like a lifetime and in that lifetime it had me wondering about how this happened. Our youth group took us on a trip so we could strengthen our friendships and connect with new friends.…

I sat there in the hard seat of my desk and waited patiently. The scent of Lysol was overwhelmingly powerful in the room, but I knew by the third week it would be overpowered by the smell of musty children and chalk dust. I could not wait for my new teacher to saunter up to me, eyes full of admiration, and give me my paper. I had worked hard on it for nearly two months during the summer prior to this new school year. Looking around the room at my new classmates, it was easy to tell who had done the summer assignments, especially with their conspicuous faces.…

Everyone has a haunting moment in their life, one that’s so traumatizing and horrible that it perpetually replays in their minds. For me, that moment occurred in the early days of summer 2015. I was stuck home babysitting my two little siblings for the day while the rest of my family was in Baton Rouge at some birthday party I didn't go to because I really didn’t like the entire parents hosting it. You know the type. The ones that don’t know what a blinker is.…
