“But her face was flushed, she was breathing rapidly, and I realized that she had a high fever.” By the authors use of descriptive language you can tell that the child is in a lot of pain, because of the fever and the disease that she had. The doctor was very surprised because diphtheria is a very painful disease and the child still did not want the doctor to examine her. One theory could be that the child thought that if she didn’t see it and nobody knew about it, then she didn’t have it. If she would have just shown her parents as soon as she started symptoms, she might have survived. All this goes to say that an act of self preservation could turn into an act of self destruction.
The main themes in this story are: doing the right ting isn’t always easy and that an act of self preservation could turn into an act of self destruction. The continuous pattern of the characters fear demonstrate the theme. These themes can really impact a person’s life
