“With one catlike movement both her hands clawed instinctively for my eyes and she almost reached them too.” Imagine this, your daughter might have a deadly disease and she’s attacking the man that is trying to help her live. “The Use of Force” by William Carlos William, portrays a child’s fear of being diagnosed with this disease. This child’s and parents fear shows a continuous pattern throughout the story and demonstrates the theme . An act of self preservation can be an act of self destruction, as well as doing the right thing isn’t always easy, is shown throughout the story by the authors use of metaphors and descriptive language.

“The child was fairly eating me up with her cold, steady eyes, and no expression to her face whatsoever.”

“But her face was flushed, she was breathing rapidly, and I realized that she had a high fever.” By the authors use of descriptive language you can tell that the child is in a lot of pain, because of the fever and the disease that she had. The doctor was very surprised because diphtheria is a very painful disease and the child still did not want the doctor to examine her. One theory could be that the child thought that if she didn’t see it and nobody knew about it, then she didn’t have it. If she would have just shown her parents as soon as she started symptoms, she might have survived. All this goes to say that an act of self preservation could turn into an act of self destruction.

The main themes in this story are: doing the right ting isn’t always easy and that an act of self preservation could turn into an act of self destruction. The author portrayed these themes throughout the story by using metaphors and descriptive language in a way that was simple and easy to understand. “The Use of Force” by William Carlos William, portrays a child’s fear of being diagnosed with this disease. The continuous pattern of the characters fear demonstrate the theme. These themes can really impact a person’s life
