Descriptive Essay: The Scared Girl

Decent Essays
The Scared Girl As you enter the room the sweet aroma of oatmeal and honey surrounds you. A little girl is being fed by her father with a cold metal spoon. There is some faint yelling in the distance, and the gunshots become fewer and fewer. The father is trying to soothe his daughter, as he exclaims that it will all be okay. The daughter’s knee slightly brushes across her father’s rugged and dirty clothes. The father moves to adjust the heavy burden that he carries on his back. The musk of the room soon engulfs them and the smell of gunpowder overcomes the oatmeal’s aroma. The bowl of oatmeal slowly becomes colder and more bitter. The yelling stops and the gunpowder smoke clears, leaving the father smiling at his beautiful creation.

Knocking turns to banging, banging to screaming, and screaming to destruction as the mother breaks down the door. Her son lies on the floor, white capsules surrounding his cold body.…

In Brown Girl Dreaming, for me at least, it was hard to find direct quotes that represented feminism and women empowerment. Instead, I looked at the book as a whole. As I previously mentioned, feminism does have woman’s rights in sight, but it also aims to reach for gender equality. Woodson goes above and beyond that. As a child, she became fascinated with poetry, especially the works of Langston Hughes.…
