The Mustache and the Morons “I got the stuff,” Katelyn had said to me in a small wicked voice. I had come up with an ingenious idea. I wanted to pull a prank on this boy, whose name was Cody. He was a senior on the basketball team, and like all seniors, he had a life sized statue to the left of the gym doors, closest to the student parking lot, just waiting for me to get my hands on. I thought it would be absolutely hilarious… I was terribly wrong. After one of my basketball games, Katelyn and I went to work on our plan. The ride home seemed instant. As I walked inside, my mother could tell something was wrong, but I went straight to my room. When I picked up my phone, it was blown up with texts from Katelyn. “Things always have a way of figuring themselves out.” That’s what my dad always would tell me when I was younger which, in a way, relates my life to Jeannette Walls’ in The Glass Castle. He told me that whether or not things had problems over time or in a matter of seconds, they would always figure themselves out. I carry those words with me as a reminder that things for me were really hard at one point, but in the end they figured themselves out. My parents divorced when I was twelve years old, and just headed into 7th grade.…

James and I just stared at each other for a few seconds with blank expressions. I decided to remind my mother that James and I had been asleep until she had awoken us and brought us to this cold, white basement. I made sure to let her know that James and I had been well behaved and hadn’t broken anything like other times we had visited places. My mother sniffled and giggled at me; she then said that I didn’t need to worry, we weren’t getting in trouble. My mother then asked if it was okay for her to explain why we were hiding in this basement and why we left so late at night.…

One of the most difficult things for me is to think back to the exact moment I realized I was suffering from depression. I was 13 and it was early march.
