Descriptive Essay: The Brecknock Park Trail

I can hear the whistle of the fall wind blowing as I lace up my trainers. It’s a beautiful fall day in the heart of cross country season. Today is a solo ten mile run. I do not take much stock in fate, but it is amusing how prophetic that simple statement has been. I stand up and jog over to the start of the Brecknock Park trail where my cross country team trains. My Garmin watch beeps and I’m off. I do a quick systems check, all my joints and muscles feel fine and the breeze is to my back, its shaping up to be a good run. The trail feels like home underneath my feet. I think back to the countless hours of training I’ve lead here during captain’s practices over the summers. My watch beeps again, the warm up mile is complete, just a few seconds north of six minutes. Now the trail begins to twist, but I know ever rise and curve of the trail so well I could run it with my eyes closed. …show more content…
The edge of the trail is approaching, but the run is still just beginning. As I move off the trail and onto the roads, I remember back to when I was twelve when I won the eighteen and under age group for my first half marathon. It’s still one of my favorite moments. As I reminisce, the faces of many of the runners that I trained appear in my mind. I think of how happy they were when they realized their passion for running. I feel pride in knowing that I helped them reach their goals. As I continue to knock out sub six minute miles I smile in my moment of nostalgia. A slight pain begins in my knees, its nothing major though, simply another passing discomfort in the picture of the entire run. Slightly over half way now and my path has shifted, now the wind is in my face. That’s fine though I prefer a little extra mental challenge in the second half of a

As a new member of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, I have been assigned to do a GPS survey and a GIS analysis of the Kennedy Valley Trail (Sam Rayson Valley Trail) for the purpose of the development of the trail as there are no amenities in the trail. To get a general idea of how things are placed in a trail, I did a pre-survey on the trail west of Kennedy Rd. (Etobicoke Creek Trail) and found that it was quite undeveloped as well. Below is the data of how many light posts there are and the steps between.…

And for the college-age Satre, picture a 6-foot tall human gorilla. Will’s status as a US Naval Academy officer shows he won’t back down from a competition or challenge, and marathons are no different. These men train by running more than 40 miles a week. This mileage consists of interval and hill training alternating with the ‘recovery’ days of 7 miles. When asked if the younger Satre ever stops to walk when he trains, he responds with a strict “No,” as if even the simple thought of walking is beneath him.…

Every wednesday I crossed the finish line 1 minute sooner than I had the previous wednesday. If I could do that, I could do anything. On a cold morning in late October of 2010, I timidly put on my uniform, followed by my warm up sweats, and tied the laces of my running sneakers for the last time of the year. All of my hard work paved the way for that day: my final race. The time had come.…

Before starting to train for this run I was nervous, I did not think it would be possible to get myself to run 5 K and could not begin to think about doing a 10 K. During the training process I discovered that I preferred ten minutes running and one minute walking opposed to seven minutes running and one minute walking. I decided the ten and one method the day of the run, I stuck with it and pushed through. Eventually I understood how to breath when running and how to run distances. One of the first runs our class did back in September in the ravine I felt disgusting afterwards. It was a hot day, I was running at the back of the line, I had cramps and I just wanted to take a nap.…
