Sometimes, I come up with friends and we sit on the rocks or right on the ground and we talk for hours. When the chaotic rebelliousness of teenagers doesn’t come across the place, Starr Hill is a place of beauty and a place for connection. Here, I connect with some of my closest friends. Nobody really bothers us until we stay 15 minutes too late into the night and the party goers come piling in on dirtbikes and fourwheelers. However, if I get lucky, the parties are carried up to the upper hill …show more content…
The beauty of Starr Hill is the idea that you get to connect with nature so easily, considering that the location is more secluded from the rest of the towns and houses around. A strong connection with nature can be felt when one is surrounded almost entirely by nature, but the connection is more prominent when there is a push to connect as a child. “Experience in the natural environment may increase the likelihood that people will engage in responsible environmental behaviors, especially if the nature experiences begin at an early age,” as Martha Monroe and Judith Cheng state. (Cheng and Monroe, pg #1). Enforcing kids to go outside and start to create a strong connection with nature will be beneficial and lasting in the long run, as well. Regarding this topic, a survey was also conducted on two thousand American adults ranging from ages 18-90. Upon surveying those two thousand people, they were asked about their natural experiences before age 11. It was found that “The results suggest that participating in wild nature activities (hiking, camping, and hunting) and domestic nature activities (tending flowers and gardening)

Wallace Stegner’s “Wilderness Letter” portrays the importance of wilderness. Wilderness has always held a different meaning as a child for me it held another world. Playing outside, going to wildlife reserves, and watching shows like “Zoboomafoo” that taught about different animals and their habitat all played a part in my love for it. Experiencing the outdoors should be something that is dome willingly to detach and refresh. The Internet has slowly taken that away from children because instead of going outdoors time is spent staring at screens.…

It is no secret that the idea of wilderness grips every American citizen. Some authors including, William Cronon, have gone to great lengths to explain American infatuation with the wild. Cronon in his article The Trouble with Wilderness, Or Getting Back to the Wrong Nature, presents the sublime nature of wilderness as one of the reasons Americans imagine nature. I believe both I, Krakauer and Chris McCandless disagree with William’s Cronon’s assessment of the American psyche. Rather than seeing the wilderness as, “rare places on earth where one had more chance than elsewhere to glimpse the face of God” (Cronon), Krakauer, McCandless and most Americans believe wilderness is a place to find yourself.…
