In a world of nauseatingly overpriced theme park tickets, nothing is more refreshing than the words “free admission,” a phrase written on the entrance sign at the 35th Annual Strawberry Festival held at Merritt Estate Winery in Forestville this past weekend.
There’s no catch either. After free admission, guests enjoyed more free activities such as live music from vivacious rock bands like Buffalo’s favorite Strictly Hip, wine tasting, and a classic car show hosted by Lake Shore Street Rod Association.

Kids enjoyed a free bounce house, sported extravagant balloon hats, and twirled around the lawn as Lana Marie, lead singer of WNY’s #1 rock band Black Widow, belted out “Summer of 69” to a pleasantly buzzed crowd.
Essentially, guests learned that there was no such thing as strangers at the festival; only friends they haven’t met yet. “Everyone here has a positive, upbeat personality” said Charlene Dye, a local. Even the parking director was kind and patient with frightening parkers, like myself.
Proudly supporting The Food Bank of WNY, the festival ended up collecting dozens of donations and non-perishable food items to give to The Food Bank of WNY.
So, if you love wine and helping people, or you and you’re family want to take a break from expensive amusement parks and vacations next summer, take an easy drive down to the annual Strawberry Festival on 2264 King Road in Forestville to enjoy a friendly atmosphere hidden in the hills at the east end of the Lake Erie Wine Country. It’s these friendly, local events where you’ll find yourself making the best

Behind me sits the entire crowd of the sold out Virginia Women’s Chorus Candlelight Concert. When I arrived in Charlottesville months earlier, I could have never expected to be here. I have just finished performing a piece with the chorus minutes earlier, when a member of the chorus steps forward and addresses the audience to explain and introduce the next piece.…
