Candace, a junior in high school, decided to do something different today--she would walk to school. It was a crisp fall morning, and it felt wonderful outside. Besides, her neighborhood wasn’t far from her small high school. Her boyfriend, Cody, normally picked her up, but she had told him not to worry about it this morning. She had plans to leave early, to stop to get breakfast at a small cafe on the corner, and then to head to school.

Long time no see,” the honey smooth voice said. It immediately clicked with a familiarity to her. She’d know that voice anywhere. Candace turned around with a smile on her face.
“Evan Tanner,” she said enthusiastically as she pulled him into a hug. “I haven’t talked to you in forever.”

As he talked, she continuously became more and more annoyed by even the sound of his name. Eventually, he asked if the two of them were still dating.
Before Candace could even process what was happening, a “no” slipped from her mouth. She thought about correcting herself; that would probably be the right thing to do. She started thinking about her relationship with Cody recently and realized that she’d had more enjoyment in this morning breakfast with Evan than she had had on the last few dates with
