My team was busy working hard on drills, so I decided I would get the horses ready for them. I brushed off my soiled old t-shirt and walked across the dirt-covered arena. As I grow closer to the stables, I began to hear a girl yelling angrily. I curiously looked around the corner to see a girl dressed in a nice white button down short with a pink garden rose tie, tight tan riding pants, and black knee high boots. She was about my age and was obviously not having a good talk with someone over the phone. I shuffled around the corner when the girl stopped and slammed down her phone; I stood in silence as I tried to think of what to say. Before I had a chance to retort, she harshly cut me off. “My dad did not pay a lot of money to have you just stand there and do nothing.”
By this time my team could hear the girl yelling at me from across the stables and indoor area. I smiled at the girl while I picked up her fancy saddle and dropped it on the cowpied ground in front of her. I walked away even as she continued to scream at me. “This is why people don’t like vaulters! You all are poor idiots! You can’t even do your job! I pay good money to have you take care of my horse! You should be thanking me!” The girls voice began to fade off as she stormed off. I made it back to my team and explained that we wouldn’t be using horses that day. I ended up getting a call from my boss about the situation. It turned out that the girl was from an upper class family that also donated some money to the stable. My boss explained to the family what actually happened and they decided to donate their horse and supplies to us as apology for the girl’s behavior and as her punishment. Apparently, this wasn’t the first time she had acted that way. The horse became the new vaulting horse and we sold the saddle to a woman that had been riding at the stables for a long time. I learned a lot from that experience. I learned to always be humble, especially in situations with those who may not be in the same class as me. That girl thought she was superior because she had more money,
