Jeffrey Gonzalez was pacing down the wide hallways at Badger Elementary. It was an overcast Wednesday morning. He was one of the only black kids in the school, but usually nobody seemed to care about it. Suddenly, a kid named Paul jumped out of nowhere. “Look at those clothes! What are these? Walmart 8s,” Paul smirked while pointing at his shoes. Others started to gather around and laugh. “No, these are Vans that I got from the Shoe Carnival,” Jeffrey shot back. The laughter only got louder. “Vans? Well, probably because you’re living on the streets and you don’t have enough money to afford Jordans, they cost as much as diamonds to you!” The crowd silently gasped, and then started to snuffle and tried their best to not laugh. The entire class seemed well aware of the scene that had happened before. The bullying had seemed like a joke, but it really hurt his feelings. According to BeyondBullying.com: “Racist bullying in schools can range from ill-considered remarks, which are not intended to be hurtful, to deliberate physical attacks causing serious injury. Racist bullying can be identified by the motivation of the bully, the language used, and/or by the fact that victims are singled out because of the colour of their skin, the way they talk, their ethnic grouping or by their religious or cultural practices.” Jeffrey walked the the attendance line. You had to drag your profile picture over to the “Here” area, and you picture is originally in the “Not Here” area. Paul strolled over to the line. He pointed at the picture of Jeffrey and said “Wow, look at this contrast of colors. Black and white, white and black. Just doesn’t mix.” Paul snickered. Jeffrey looked around and noticed that nobody was laughing. Too far, perhaps? Paul thought. This type of behavior happens everyday across schools all over the world. An interview from Anmol Chahal says: “Racism is treating others inferior based on their race, and discrimination on the race.” Anmol also stated that racism is a large problem in the society, and sometimes it get get out of hand. Also, he said that he sees racist jokes around his school all the times that sometimes get out of hand like this
