The Woman

Glassy beads slipped down my cup recklessly; the condensation flimsly falling onto the vinyl table top. He sat across from me, mummering the events of the day in a voice of boredom. My plate of food was cold and my fork laid unused next to it. The black and white tiles of the floor were hypnotizing and numbing to the mind. Across from me he ate indignatnly and unaware; until, the glass door shook with a rapt from the outside. Our eyes met, his drilling inot mine with confusion expecting an answer. With a sigh, I suggested that it must be a salesman. Doubt crossed both of our minds, yet he rose from his seat to answer the door. Her shoes were plain along with her brown hair pulled away from her face. From my chair, she seemed so fragile, with skin like white paper and hands like wrinkled cotton. Her eyes were sunken deeply into her skull with dark half moons under them; these black orbs were pulling and grasping for something, anything. "Is there anything we can help you with?" Like a trained predator, her whole body seemed to align to the promt; eyes centered and head focused directly. My mouth dried and his fingers digged deeper into the unforgiving wood. She opened and closed her mouth, a rigged crack in her face, like a drying gaping fish. Unhinging her lips, she said "I need some help with my car. Would you please help me?" The voice, so smooth and easy, seemed unatural to her. Like a prerecorded plea, she asked this three more times. He and I sensed the eerieness of the situation and this woman. "I 'm sorry, we can 't help you. Have a good night." Rushed manners and a quick goodbye seemed like enough of a dissmisal for her. Instead of turning away, her eyes zeroed in him, unwavering, unerving. "I 'm sorry." Her grisly nails slid onto the glass door 's …show more content…
On the black and white tiles, she became apart of some illusion of my mind. She manifested into something so much more real before my eyes. The coat was ratted and torn; moth eaten holes revealed icy skin. Her eyes were boring into him with unhinged reconigtion. "I need some help with my car. Would you please help me? I need some help with my car. Would you please help me? I need some help with my car. Would you please help me?" Her hand was on his forearm now, claws sharp leaving marks into his brown skin. He jerked from her grip but she stepped closer. Closer to me. I sat like prey cornered by a predator, waiting for the next move, be it eiether my end or my escape. She moved unknowingly; her face somehow only inches from mine. Black irises unwavering, nails covered in age and debris, skin wrinkled and cracked, teeth brown and decayed. "I need some help with my car. Would you please help me?" Her head cocked to the side like a gun ready to shoot as a chacire grin spread from ear to

The last vestiges of fall had passed and only brown, shriveled leaves remained on the sidewalk. Trees appeared naked, shivering without their blanket of color. The thick mist that was not really rain and not really fog covered the southeastern corner of New Jersey. It was depressing, just like most days in the area surrounding the Overbrook Asylum. On the outside, Overbrook was a welcoming place where patients were treated with care and respect; the inside was very different.…

The frosty treetops glistened from the weak radiance of the sun, that was tucked behind the dark and opaque clouds that blanketed across the sky. Snow and sleet fell from above, covering the entire ground in front of us. The journey was treacherous enough as it was, but adding snow to it was like pouring salt on an open wound. I’ve always hated Jotunheim. It wasn’t the cool breeze or the ominous craggily rocks in the distance that set me on edge, it was what was within Jotunheim that did.…
