Descriptive Essay: Practicing The Violin

A choice has been made to pick this delicate instrument, a weapon of my choice—the violin. Carefully, one removes the seals from the case it has been resting in—it made a soft clicking sound like the locks from a prisoner’s cage. The case opens slowly revealing what was inside of it. The instrument patiently waits for its master as it lays on its furry navy blue bed. Silence filled the room as each one stare at each other and talk with their amazed eyes. The violin was glistening with beauty; its body handcrafted by a luthier and made of spruce and maple from the finest trees in the forest delivered by the most hardworking men.

Practicing the violin, learning to control it by improving the bow's angle to commit to that specific spot in between the playing area. The fingers that are on its neck are slightly bent followed by the wrist. Each finger placement corresponded with the note that is provided in the music sheet that is requested to play. "High D, A string, 1st position, 3rd string, make sure to hold it for 4 counts" my mind repeats the information received and learned. The moment has come to conquer the truth, the note may be played differently from before, maybe better or worse. These doubts killing what's left of the concentration devoted to this single decision. One made the choice and played the note, "Oops! Out of tune, maybe sharp?" Fixing the notes becomes a surreal challenge, the sound waves counteracting with each other, as it becomes sharper, the wavelengths gradually become shorter and the flatter it goes, the longer the wavelengths become. Everyday after finishing my homework, I would go to the piano and pick up where I’d left off in “Sonate Pathétique” the previous night. It’d been a couple of months since the day I first played it, and I’d managed to greatly improve as a result of the countless hours I spent practicing. That night, I was determined to play through the entire first movement without committing a single mistake. Unlike many of my friends, I had a very meticulous mentality. Everything I did had to be done with the utmost care and precision because to me, nothing beat quality work.…

Before I would stiffly sit or stand while moving a bow across a string, but now, that spell is broken, and I can feel the music moving expressively through my body as the melodious notes are played. I often take some time to stop and think about what the composer was trying to portray when writing the piece. My favorite conductor once said “Good. You’ve learned the notes, but you’ve only learned half of the music.” , that was the first time I started paying close attention to what the composer’s feelings were towards the music; the dynamics, expressive terms, and emotions involved in playing the…

The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto was written for western style orchestra and features a solo violin played using some Chinese techniques. This piece retains the Chinese flavor but however to some extent. The reason why I have chosen this question and this piece is because as a violinist, I have the interest in how the violin in The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto is a western instrument, but however it is still able to capture some of the Chinese style. In this essay, I will be comparing the recording of the original composition of The Butterfly Lovers with Violin solo and the Yue Opera.…

Music is the universal language, and my duty as a devoted violinist is to convey my message of passion through every bow stroke. Whenever I participate in an ensemble, whether it be the SCHS Chamber Orchestra or YOPW’s Youth Symphony Orchestra, I enter into a haven in which the excess worries of everyday life wither away, and all that stands is the music before me. Jack and Clara, two high school students, have spent years excelling their skills in their school band. After six short years, they are the leaders of the clarinet section, showing the Freshman what music can feel like when they just take a minute to feel it. Although they share the same type of instrument and passion, their style and posture set these two apart, but these differences show just how unique the band is. The personality and the style of a musician is greatly portrayed through the posture of the musician himself, for Jack and Clara, they have distinct definitions of disposition.…

The screeching of my violin echoed off the wall as I struggled to play Mendelssohn's concerto in E minor. The double stops that were meant to flow in harmony came out in a jumbled mass of notes indistinguishable from the shriek of a dying cow. I whimpered as these terrible sounds emitted out of my violin, and threw my violin down in defeat. I slowly tilted my head towards the clock, a terrifying reminder that my addition was only 10 min away. I gathered up my music, and ambled away from the empty practice room to where my judge would listen to my audition.…

Music therapy. A term that has grown so much over the past few decades. As a music therapist in training, when people find out what I’m studying, the common response is “wow, that sounds so interesting, what is it?” I then often struggle to find the words to describe such an amazing concept to people in such few words. The trouble is that “music therapy means different things to different people for myriad reasons” (Bruscia, 1998).…

Todays society is surrounded by music in many different facets. The exposure comes from the growth and dependence on technology, which allows the movement of noise to any location. On Thursday, September 29th at 7:30pm I attended the LU Symphony Orchestra Concert in Towns Auditorium. Prior to the concert beginning, I noticed a wide variety of instruments on the stage. There were some instruments that I did not know the name of but for the most part, I knew a large majority of the string, woodwind and brass instruments presented. The last time that I went to a symphony was when I was in elementary school, so attending an orchestral concert in college was a much different experience. I was fascinated by the diversity of instruments.…

Introduction Previous Research article titled “Exercising with an iPod, Friend, or Neither: Which is Better for Psychological Benefits?” stated that exercising, in general, has been proven to reduce the chances of acquiring a variety of illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, cancer and many other life-threatening conditions. In addition, exercising has psychological benefits as well and may increase self-reliance, decrease stress, and improve moods. One of the ways one’s exercising environment could be improved is by incorporating music in it. Those who exercise to music create a more positive atmosphere to workout in which the person is able to accomplish his or her goals, while being pleasantly distracted by the music compared to those who exercise without music. They hypothesized that those who used a device for music (for ex.an iPod) or had a friend to work out…
