Taking the Helm in the Streets of Amsterdam
Not too long ago, during the first week of the 2017 summer vacation, I found myself in a faraway place, a charming place that was Amsterdam, Netherlands. Specifically Vondelpark near the old part of the city. The park was a wonderful grassy haven surrounded by the sights and sounds of a bustling, lively city. The sky was cloudless, the air was warm and relaxing. The entire park quietly screamed at me to lay down and stay awhile. All the while I could hear the friendly conversations of all those lounging on the wonderfully green grass. If I heeded to the demands of the park, and decide to stay, I would find myself feeling as if I could paint a masterpiece or compose an opera. The day was hot, however an unusully

We sauntered through the Dutch streets, occasionally I had to resource to the map to regain my bearings when we would get turned around, I eventually led us to a Starbucks, which greatly increased my confidence in my ability to navigate the foreign city. After my sister was effectively revived, we continued our march towards the more crowded, and beautiful, part of Amsterdam where we could browse many fashionable European stores. We were only allowed a peek at a tiny a slice of the seemingly endless rows of stores before we needed to head back to our apartment. After successfully navigating Amsterdam with a map I was feeling a little ambitious. I decided to try to find my way home without a map. In my mind, I was testing myself to see if I could navigate a foreign city on my own. I Looked all around me, and soon realized I recognised many of the buildings and some of the street names, even though they were in Dutch. I towed my sister and mom to follow me, as I led us across a street I couldn’t even pronounce If I had heard it a thousand

The canyons this morning were miraculously beautiful. As I exited my tent, I made some eggs over the bunsen burner. The wood was wet and cold, and wouldn't light, due to the rain the previous night. We packed our belongings getting ready for the nature walk we would have today. I laced up my jet black, and pearly white tennis shoes, then walked over to the nature lodge to meet our trip advisor.…

The summer breeze brushed past my sundress as I walked down the lane. My over-sized brown boots dragging on the ground. The vibrant sunlight kissing my face with its glory as it peeks through the leafy branches of each tree overhead. As I pass friendly faces down the street my smile starts to widen. The laughter and neighborly conversation that surrounds me as I stride further along the lane fills me with joy and happiness.…

Following the sign to Clementon, I passed the Berlin Mart, looking no worse than it did 40 years ago. Winding downhill, with the water slide sticking out above the trees, I turned on White Horse Avenue, parked my bike at the library, and walked to Harper 's Pub. After a few beers, I walked out into the afternoon sun, adjusted my eyes, stepped down and stood on the corner of Berlin Road, looking towards the park. After starring at 2 blocks of tree-lined sidewalks…

Excitement built up inside of me. We were about an hour away from my aunt’s house; I loved the thought of being with my family, but I also loved the daring and silly activities that we did when we got there. That summer, we had gone to a strawberry farm. I thought that it was going to be incredibly monotonous and absurd; but I was wrong. It was torrid and unbearable in the summer heat, and when we arrived there, I sat back and dreaded the walk, but the summer brought great things to that…

Vibrant birds chirp cheerful melodies, and a stream trickles by whistling a joyful tune. The rising sun peeks over the mountain, and I am warmed. The thick beams of light flash about me until they break the frigid state of the long untamed grass and light the trees with a certain glow. A gentle breeze wafts by; quietly rustling the leaves while soothingly spurring soft sweeping and swaying motions among the flowers. Nature’s grandeur surrounds me in a beautiful panorama, and this is only the beginning.…

It seemed like the “noble city” that Trollope was referring to. Taking a subway for the first time and being surrounded by so many different people on a hot summer day did actually make me a little uncomfortable but before I knew it, I became completely ok with it. Every direction you looked, there were people, cabs, bikes, buses, and people trying to drive their cars around the quite fascinating chaos. In my little town, walking was perfectly fine to get from one place to another. I don’t think I have ever seen a yellow cab or a taxi in general while growing up in Kadzidlo, Poland.…

When I first signed up for the class, I did it on a whim. I had always wanted to study abroad at some point during my college years, and I have always been interested in mental health issues, so I decided to take this class. Even though it was a rather rash decision to go to the Netherlands, I was interested in learning about how “European socialists” and the always liberal Dutch people deal with many social issues impacting the society, and I was eager to know if their approach can be helpful in the United States, and in my home country, China. In the Netherlands, we as a class listened to lectures given by many people in, or impacted by, the mental healthcare system.…

I am at the botanical garden where a new world is created with flowers and other natural resources to create wonderment for the current season; each season is changed and every year is different.
