Smokey Row
When I arrived to 1910 Cottage Grove Ave in Des Moines I saw the coffee shop I was looking for. When I pulled into Smokey Row, I was able to park in the last open spot in the parking lot. I was looking at a brick building; there was a giant light up sign shaped like an arrow facing down that said “Smokey Row Coffee”. This was my first time going to Smokey Row; from the outside it seemed run-down and small. I had heard great things about the place, but from the outside appearance, it was not living up to my expectations.
This place was set up differently than any other coffee shop I had been in. When I walked in, directly in front of me was the line to order. I was met with the smell of fresh coffee and the sound of chatter.

There was only one person sitting in each booth. In the booth closest to me there was a girl with blonde hair wearing sweats, a sweatshirt, and a messy bun. She had her computer out and seemed to be composing a lengthy email to someone. It appeared to me that she had not even bought anything because a Smokey Row coffee cup was nowhere to be found on her table. I then noticed she was not the only one like that, although the majority had bought something there was a few who had nothing but a laptop and some books on their table. The boy sitting in the booth in front of her was surfing Facebook. There was another girl sitting at the booth in front of him, but her computer was not facing …show more content…
Everyone seems to have a different personality, some are dressed up, and others are dressed down. The last people I saw enter the shop were a lady with bright green ombre hair, who had two guys with her. They both had tattoo sleeves, and one had a mohawk. This is when I realized that Smokey Row appeals to everyone, whether you like coffee or not. This was a friendly environment where people go to hang out, study, or meet friends. No one here judges one another, everyone gets their coffee and does their thing and I think that’s what makes Smokey Row a special

The coffee craze is the United States is growing rapidly and getting out of hand. Many people are paying for overpriced beverages made with suspicious ingredients. In Dave Barry’s newspaper column, “Decaf Poopacino”, he explains that “the specialty coffee craze has gone too far.” He supports his claim by using an anecdote from his own life along with informal comedic diction to relate to the reader and make is point more clear. His humorous tone allows him to entertain the reader and it allows him to make his irritating experience seem like a comedic and relatable story.…

As I walked down the hallway of the Memorial Union, I search for the staircase that will bring me to my haven for the next hour and a half. After I expressed worry to my friend that I would have nowhere to go during my long class breaks, she told me that Sparky’s Den is where she goes to hang out between classes. As I descended down the gray staircase, I pictured what the room would look like; with a name like Sparky’s Den, I saw a crowded room with dark brown wooden paneling on the walls, dim lighting, red, plush booths lining the walls, and gives off a sports bar atmosphere; you can imagine my surprise when I reached the bottom of the stairs and looked into a bland, white room with light brown finishes lining the walls with thirty-or-so tables and booths, and two long couches. As I walked through the opening in the room, I was hit with a cool blast of air. While the Memorial Union was cool, it was no match to the artic breeze of Sparky’s Den; as the cold air hit me, goosebumps rose all over my body.…

Text Analysis: The Scoop on Menus There are over 55,000 coffee shops in the U.S. ("Number of Coffee and Snack Shops in the U.S. 2016 | Statistic”). Many of these establishments serve and sell various beverages to those seeking caffeine or a sweet drink. Although coffee shops are synonymous with a morning pick-me-up, the newest addition to the University of Arizona’s Student Union is extending the coffee house to ice creams and shakes (Darby). The line-up of offerings is available to view through the modern creamery’s very own menu.…

In many areas, a pub is the central establishment of the community. In the video “Portland’s Non-Profit” edited by CBS News, reporter Luke Burbank recognizes an up and coming pub in Oregon with different tactics. Burbank interviews different customers with similar opinions on the pub. A non-profit organization is one that is dedicated to a particular cause, true, but I do not believe that any organization as such is solely non-profit for many reasons. For one many people think of the word profit in terms of just money which it is not.…

This is seen through the design of the store fronts and restaurant patios (refer to appendix 4). It was quite noticeable that the patio designs of restaurants and coffee shops all followed a very neutral, raw, distressed look in order to flow with the design of the district. This was done even if the exterior of the shop did not match the theme on the inside, but many of the stores interior followed the old rustic feel of the district (refer to appendix 5). Visually the Distillery district is very pleasing. This is due to the abundance of stores and shops which run along the inner streets of the district.…

Compassion Leads to Charity What is the true meaning of compassion? It is simply understanding the situation of someone else and having the desire to help. Then, how people learn the meaning of compassion? According to the author Barbara Lazear Ascher, people are born without knowing the meaning of compassion, so it is something people learn with experiences in daily life. In her essay "On Compassion" Ascher shows the situation of two women who made her think about the real reason why a person decides to help, besides compassion.…

After a while of searching we finally found two seats next to each other, middle of the row and skewed to the left. The lights went dark as the screen lit up with a “Please silence your cellphones” cue card. The popcorn started to burn my legs through the bag, I always forgot how hot the popcorn got. Just as it started burning Alice picked it up and placed it on the floor. I smiled but it quickly faded as my hand bumped against hers on the small arm rest.…

The booth had a dark brown table that included crumbs scattered all over it. The seat was even worse, it was more uncomfortable than watching a match of soccer— soccer is my least favorite sport. At least the light above me was dimmed down and not burning my eyes. Even though I was a little agonized by my seat, I still felt very relaxed and at home— which was nice because usually I feel strange and awkward in new places. The only item that bothered me was the ceiling, it was dull and lifeless.…

New Orleans is a melting pot of varying music, cultures, and atmospheres; and is by far, my favorite place to visit. New Orleans music is a mix of Jazz, Gypsy, and Cajun music, which seems to uplift your soul and make you want to dance. The culture there is a true melting pot of international backgrounds that mix together, like a good bowl of Jambalaya. And the atmosphere is like magic, with its café’s and street performers. There is almost never a dull moment in New Orleans, and the energy there is extraordinary.…
