When I arrived to 1910 Cottage Grove Ave in Des Moines I saw the coffee shop I was looking for. When I pulled into Smokey Row, I was able to park in the last open spot in the parking lot. I was looking at a brick building; there was a giant light up sign shaped like an arrow facing down that said “Smokey Row Coffee”. This was my first time going to Smokey Row; from the outside it seemed run-down and small. I had heard great things about the place, but from the outside appearance, it was not living up to my expectations.

There was only one person sitting in each booth. In the booth closest to me there was a girl with blonde hair wearing sweats, a sweatshirt, and a messy bun. She had her computer out and seemed to be composing a lengthy email to someone. It appeared to me that she had not even bought anything because a Smokey Row coffee cup was nowhere to be found on her table. I then noticed she was not the only one like that, although the majority had bought something there was a few who had nothing but a laptop and some books on their table. Everyone seems to have a different personality, some are dressed up, and others are dressed down. The last people I saw enter the shop were a lady with bright green ombre hair, who had two guys with her. They both had tattoo sleeves, and one had a mohawk. This is when I realized that Smokey Row appeals to everyone, whether you like coffee or not. This was a friendly environment where people go to hang out, study, or meet friends. No one here judges one another, everyone gets their coffee and does their thing and I think that’s what makes Smokey Row a special
