Butcher Knife Creek

Rushing water passes by as the aspen tree leaves drift this way and that. One lonely leaf rides the tiny rapids catching on a rock and drying in the morning sun. Many unfound observations lie underneath my eyes in the place I go to when I’m feeling lost and just need a break from the times when life gets in the way. Families and dog walkers are everywhere, but I am hidden behind a tree with roots as big as skyscrapers. It is my enchanted wonderland that no one can take away. My enchanted wonderland is a place where I will never be seen... but one where I can see every pinprick of movement.

In the morning, dew drops sparkle and shimmer on the leaves as the sun peeks over the horizon. As the arrays of light meet, they form miniature rainbows that glide across the creek. The raging creek pushes its way down to the intersection of meandering rivers with nothing to block it’s path. Off in the distance Mt. Werner makes a perfect scene with the sun glowing

Around the calm stream, prickly bushes tingle and scratch on legs. Stepping cautiously back onto a shady part of the trail, the grainy, sand-like gravel shifts under the soles of shoes. As the shade disappears the sun's rays blaze onto Earth warming up its surface from the cool afternoon that come only a few minutes earlier. Moving back to the rushing stream a small, damp rock is rock is covered with slimy moss. If one slides off their sneakers or boots to cross the creek, they slip one foot into the narrow area of the creek, then they quickly snap it back out from the ice cold water that makes their foot quiver and freeze. They try again until they get used to the shivering cold water and finally walk across. With each step they encounter a new surface of rock making sure not to slip. Once across, they reach and climb up a cliff that has jagged and curved rocks they can use as hand

I was over ecstatic when Fernando, (also known as Fernie) my best guy friend asked me to go on a walking adventure with him in our hometown of Kelseyville, California. We started off the day by walking in the forest alongside of Kelsey Creek. This forest has a really big meaning to Fernie and I, because we both love nature in every aspect and these walking adventures are not uncommon to us. Starting on the path we both got lost in our own thoughts, I got distracted by looking above me at the the canopy the tree branches created. My eyes followed the patterns the sunlight was creating as it broke through the leaves and cascaded onto the uneven forest floor.…

The Chattahoochee River, Georgia’s most heavily-used water source, is home to a variety of fish and a supplier of over 70% of the drinking water in metro Atlanta; it was also ranked number three on America’s ‘most endangered’ list. Each day, more than 250 million gallons of sewage waste water is dumped in to river, so news that the river is constantly contaminated with E. coli is no surprise. Even with the vast amount of contamination, Georgia allows the dumping of waste to continue; they give out permits to dump in the waters. Without proper laws and regulations, the continued dumping of waste on the Chattahoochee River will eventually cause it to become too contaminated for human use and wildlife survival. The Chattahoochee River begins in the northeast of Georgia and continues down 524 miles to Apalachicola Bay, Florida.…

Tucked into a valley carved by countless years of erosion, the San Lorenzo River snakes its way down through the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. As it nears UC Santa Cruz, it slows to a mere crawl, forming a swimming hole aptly named the Garden of Eden. Upon first emerging from the trees a small beach filled with a combination of sand from the rivers rage and the fine silt that covered the trail. Nearly invisible waves of heat rise from the sand, making the background appear to animate. Beyond is the river, glistening and shimmering in the midday sun.…

Sometimes I dream that I am again standing at the pathway of the Burkley house. The chimney billowed with smoke, and the magnolia bushes in full bloom; like they once did in that spring time air which curled around your every movement. I dream of again clomping my over-sized shoes against the ever twisting stone path, catching rain drops and petals in my unkempt hair. I will not lie; I do long for the Burkley house, for the essence of my youth still stays trapped in those lengthy hallways. I often forget the blizzards that struck, the lighting that cast us in darkness, the people I met.…
