Ten years ago, he was nineteen and she was about to turn twenty. She was a beauty but not the typical kind, if you see a picture of her you wouldn’t be overly impressed but seeing her in real life makes a big difference. She was dressed rather casual when he first met her; she wore a blouse that showed her shoulders. They were good shoulders, nice and smooth, not too skinny but just skinny enough to see the structure of her bones through her soft skin when she moved. She was wearing a pair of dark grey chinos with small brown stains on one lap. Everything about her had a flow to it, her slightest movements, the tone in her voice, the way she looks when she’s listening…everything combined to put elegance in a natural form giving her an aura that reveals her inherent beauty, the kind that’s in everyone’s blood, but is often washed away from one generation to another as time

The swift fluidity with which Doerr moves between the stories of Werner and Marie-Laure and the parallels he creates between them emphasizes their shared humanity. As children, both Werner and Marie-Laure are depicted as innocent, with an element of ‘light’ within them, for they focus on the good in their lives- family, ambitions and dreams- despite the war.
