Back in 1778, sugar was one of the main reasons hawaii became so popular for businessmen to travel to Hawaii. Sugar completely changed Hawaii and its economy (Doak 11). Before Liliuokalani’s reign, Lunalilo thought Bernice Bishop would be fit to run almost all business regarding land to sell to sugar plantations. Many locals were against this and due to the conflict, Lunalilo took to drink and his health quickly fell (Dye 115). This left Kalākaua in a mess and Liliuokalani in an even bigger heap of trouble. Kalākaua (and the Hawaiian people in general) believed the land to be sacred and under pressure from the U.S. government, pondered to surrender Pearl Harbor to the Navy; this lead to the Bayonet
