Personal Narrative: Steve Jobs

The clouds broke, and light began to shine through the large, curtainless, loft-style windows flanking a four-hundred-square-foot apartment containing only a bed, a faded purple sofa, a birch-coloured dinner table, and a single chair. Hand-me-downs would be the explanation to friends regarding the eclectic range of furniture. The truth was that they were obtained for free through a series of favours to strangers. I sat down and opened a laptop bought off of Craigslist. The operating system was old, and it took roughly five minutes to open an Excel spreadsheet containing financials. Watching the multicoloured, rotating beach ball of death on the screen, I fantasized that somehow the numbers would be different; that somehow, this time, when Excel opened, I would be rich. It would be years before I discovered the irony of the situation. Apple’s Steve Jobs picked the iconic beach ball after having a dream where one prevented him from moving forward; he was stuck. I had completed two university degrees. I had an excellent job in a downtown high-rise. However, I was not satisfied with the so-called status quo. I needed to measure life my way, so I became a headhunter because it encompassed the areas of business, law, ethics and the human condition. For nearly a decade, I placed executives within Fortune 500 and start-up software companies. I had a behind the scenes look at the new technologies that, quite literally, were transforming society. This exposure seeded a thought. I needed to, in some way, help society. I would spend hours reading local news and affairs in an attempt to cure my mental myopia. What I saw was rampant unfairness and unconscionability to those without access to justice. I became motivated to remedy these
