1. Family Background.
I was born in Baghdad, Iraq to a humble family of 5 – in the heart of the second Gulf War. I spent only my infant years there as my family struggled to get by. My dad had his own computer business while my mom stayed home to take care of the kids. I think inevitably my parents wanted to leave their home country with their kids one day, but it was made apparent when Saddam Hussein’s army stole my father from our house and forced him to serve in the war. Obviously the last thing my father wanted to do was go to war, and for my mother -- raising 3 kids by herself in the scorching hot and forgotten city of Baghdad was not her top priority. Sometimes she would have my older

We stayed in a humble little apartment for these few years while my father ran a business similar to the one he had in Iraq. I was still just a toddler so this wasn’t a part of my life that I remember, although it was probably one of the most peaceful parts of my childhood. My parents had some friends that also immigrated to Jordan years before who mentioned the greatness and opportunity North America had to offer and my father became obsessed. For the next several months all my father did was teach himself computer coding, programming and of course, the English language. This is the first time I’ve had to put these words on paper and I’ve never been so grateful to be writing this in the Silicon Valley – the heart of the tech …show more content…
First and most importantly, my number 1 life goal is to be genuinely happy. Whether that means being happy from a variety of internal forces or external ones. Happiness is first priority before money and lifestyle. As an Iraqi-born immigrant diagnosed with bipolar II, finding happiness is important. Steps I’m taking to achieve this happiness are leveraging my future bachelor’s degree as well as my expansive work experience. No matter what happens I’ll have these strong foundations to find an enjoyable job that I love with a good salary and benefits. Career-wise, the MBIT report has really opened my eyes to what I’m good at coupled with what I already know I’m good at. I know that I want be a CEO within the next 5 years, I’ve had so much experience owning a business as well as managing businesses. I also know that I’m very good with people, and according to my MBIT report - very extroverted. As it stands today, I like talking to people. I get energy from telling stories, listening to different perspectives and honestly I feel really depressed when I’m working from home. So I know for a fact I would like to have my home near my office in the future. Today, I have to travel 4 hours roundtrip to get to and from work every day, and naturally experiencing this has made me realize how much better my quality of life would be if I

As I have previously written on Black Elk Speaks Journal 1, this story relates to the life I lived and experienced back in my home country, Iraq. Of course both stories are set in different time lines and different events, yet they still are similar. As soon as Chapter 9 starts, Black Elk begins talking about his come country and how the soldiers came there to kill them. There was a reason for the soldiers to go out there and attempt to eliminate an entire tribe and that was because of land, money and material goods. Growing during the war in 2003 back in Iraq was quite similar to the wars and battles the Natives had went through, fortunately my story is not as gruesome as it is to many others that did not survive the war.…

My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. Even though it may be a very small interaction, I feel like I have made a small difference in their lives and I have helped them somehow.…

As an Iraqi national and an American citizen, I possess a unique perspective when contrasting the two countries. Growing up in Iraq I experienced and witnessed different forms of oppression and injustice. At the age of four, my childhood was stipped from me. My father was threatened, my neighbor was kidnapped and killed, and a missile hit my elementary school during class periods. Life in America might not be perfect, but I’m grateful and thankful to be living in such a wonderful country.…

An artifact is an object that has monetary and/or sentimental value. My artifact is coins that my family and I brought from Jordan. Even though the coins have monetary value, for me the sentimental value outweighs the monetary value. They are pretty important to me and my family because they remind me of the cruel world in the Middle East during that time. After a while, I have collected a lot of coins and paper money from different countries that I have visited, but the most meaningful coins in my collection are the Jordanian coins.…
