Soon we saw a truck driving down the beach towards where my grandparents and sister were waiting. It was the Bay County Sheriff’s Department. The truck had a surf board in the back. The man jumped out of his truck, grabbed his board and began swimming out to where we were. When he approached us he asked if we were all okay and was anyone worse off than the others. We pretty much agreed that my Dad was in the worst shape since he didn’t have a floatation device and had taken in a lot of water before making it to my Mothers float. The deputy then put my Dad one the front of the surf board and told him to use his arms and swim as hard as he could. He told the rest of us to hang on to the back of the board and kick as fast as we could. We all did the jobs we were given. We swam parallel to the shore line and in no time I could feel the sandy bottom of the ocean beneath my feet. We had done it! We were safely back on

The short stories, “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “The Fireman’s Wife” by Richard Bausch have resonated with me after reading them this semester. I am able to draw similarities from what I’ve read and associate them with the story. Doing so made what I read capture my full attention and transport me into the story. Also, I discovered and tackled flaws in my own character in the process. I found both of these short stories to have been thought provoking and an interesting read as well.…
