The Neighborhood Observation Of A Home

When someone says they grew up in a four bedroom, 2 and a half bathroom, furnished basement house you would assume the environment was warm and inviting. This house is the most beautiful one on the block and the largest one due to an extra bedroom built in 1991. From the outside looking in you would want to visit this home but everything that glitters is not gold. This house is located in University, MO and it is in what most people consider the safe part of the community. This house was purchased in the late 1960’s and my parents were the 1st black couple to move on that block. This house is very important to my parents but seems more valuable than love to them.
What makes the house appear inviting is the outer appearance. For instance, the garden work is very well maintained. The grass is cut every weekend. The grass grows green and strong with no bald spots and the flowers have color basically dripping off of them. The house has a newly added bay window and new screen door that looks like a new purchase from Home Depot. If you look to the right side of the house you will see the addition built on to the house, which makes the house look like two houses

If company did randomly show up this room would be used for entertainment. Growing up the basement looked a lot different due to the random flash flood in University City in 2008. It was a rainy Sunday morning on September 16, 2008 and the creek behind the house began to overflow. The water stated to run towards the house and knocked until it stated to flow in the basement. Terror was on my parents face when the dirty Mississippi water invaded the basement. It only took a few minutes before the water was up to my stomach level standing. I stood there and watch my parent’s pictures, music collection, furniture and other valuable items get washed away with that dirty

It is the summer 2003 and I’m pedaling fast down the street, on my bike, to get to my friend’s house. When I finally reached her house I dumped my bike off with the rest of the bikes, in the front yard, and ran inside to find everyone. I heard people upstairs and hurried up to find them. They were all sitting around talking and playing a board game. Now, think about how much interaction kids had in 2003 rather than 2015.…

The American Dream has taken on new interpretations for each generation. Each interpretation is directly related to the economy at that particular time. When you ask is home ownership still a part of the American Dream I would have to say the term “ownership” is what has changed. My grandparents owned two homes in their lifetime in which they raised their family. The first was a starter home, then once they had established their careers they built their dream home.…

All the years I’ve lived on Elm Street I have never seen any sign of life in the house across the street, except a family that moved in and moved out only a few weeks later. It’s kind of mysterious actually, and I’ve always wanted to go up to it and walk in to explore. My parents have told me the things they have heard about the house, like there was an “old man whose wife passed away right there in the house, and her spirit still lurks”, maybe that’s why the families have never stayed for more than a month. Sometimes I’ve even caught myself staring at the house from my top window trying to spot things. I want to uncover the real truth about the house that I find myself overwhelmed.…

Mama, Beneatha, Ruth, Walter, and Travis all live in this small two bedroom apartment in the south side of Chicago, which is a predominately black neighborhood. After the civil war most blacks who migrated up north ended up in the southside of Chicago causing an over population. The family along with many others in the area lived in a small kitchenette style apartment that was overly cramped. Travis was forced to sleep in the family’s living room and use the couch as a bed, while Mama and Beneatha shared a room and a bed, leaving Walter and Ruth to a room of their own. We are immediately aware of the financial hardship the family and blacks of the area are dealing with.…

Evicted by Matthew Desmond explores the frequency and consequences of eviction in the lives of the urban poor. A quantitative analysis of administrative and survey data finds that eviction is ordinary in black neighborhoods, and women from those neighborhoods are evicted at higher rates than men. A qualitative analysis of Desmond’s ethnographic data reveal multiple components impelling his stated discrepancies between tenants and their landlords regarding evictions. One of the main findings of the research is that irresponsible spending habits of individuals experiencing deep poverty is in fact logical.…

In modern times, the western approach towards nature and Life is practical in the sense that it can all be explained by a scientific phenomenon. Due to this mentality, spiritual connections to our roots, nature and Life, are abysmal. To Linda Hogan, writer of Dwellings, this inauspicious approach confirms a detachment from “the treaties once made with [nature]”(11), to which Native Americans dearly hold on to. Throughout Dwellings, Hogan recounts significant experiences that enable her to inch closer to her roots and raise her awareness on the beauties of Life.…

There were no visitors, no happy families visiting with each other, and not much interaction between the residents. They seemed to be starving for attention from anyone. Although there was an activity room, I did not see an activity happening in the time I was there and the fact that there were only 3 bottles of glue sitting out suggests that not many people were taking part in the activities. The pictures in the activity room could symbolize what is still in the residents’ hearts and minds. The drawing of the home with sunshine and a dog could have represented what used to be someone’s prior life.…
