Many people how beautiful the grounds of Berry College are, but what they don’t know is there are 26,000 acres of them. The length of the hiking, biking trails is stated at 40 miles, but that is just the service roads and main trails. If you get off the main trails at Berry you can get lost, and end up in a different county; that is what I did.
It was a beautiful autumn day, a day that only November in Northwest Georgia could provide. You could see your breath in the morning and the high that afternoon was in the low 70’s. Everyone else was watching football so I had the place to myself. My normal loop consisted of a trip down old Redmond Road, which is basically a logging road. Next is the Trail named Mountain Goat; the name reflects its landscape. Then over a trail named Snow Loop to a lovely house on the top on the mountain called the House of Dreams. Then it is back to civilization on Old High School Road. The whole trip is about 19 miles and takes me just over two hours. On occasion, I have turned down a road or trail that I did not know. Berry near the gate to the House of Dreams, I took a fateful right turn down a trail I had always wanted to explore. As I continued down the new road I guessed that I was traveling northwest. This meant I should be able to turn right at some point and head back to the main campus and civilization. Unfortunately the turn never came and I was invested in my new adventure. I was about 14 miles in to the ride when I started down the new trail and had gone at least 8 miles since. What was worse is I had been steadily going downhill for the last 6 miles. If I were to turn around now I would have to climb back over the mountain and it was getting late. Sooner, or later I would find a cross road.
