Descriptive Essay: Life At Smith Mountain Lake

The sound of the water as it splashed against the dock. Motor boats humming as they idled up the cove. My wakeboard cut through the glassy water like butter. A slight tingle on my nose and cheeks from the sun. Contentment for me is time spent with family at Smith Mountain Lake. Time at the lake has always been special to me. I feel at peace there because of the simplicity, experience with nature, and the love of my family.
Awakening to the smell of sizzling bacon as I stretched out across my bunk bed, put a smile on my face. This was day one of Maw-Maw camp. Maw-Maw camp was an annual tradition for my brother, cousin and I. Each summer, we spent a week with our grandparents at their cabin on Smith Mountain Lake. The day always began with

Floats, coolers, towels, and fishing rods bumped along with us as we rounded the lane. Once at the dock, I fished for bass and carp using balled up bread for bait. Gazing through the binoculars, I found egrets, geese, and deer. We picnicked on the dock and if we could talk Maw-Maw into it, we would take the paddle boat to the marina across the cove for lunch.

We tell stories of summers past or go for a cruise on the boat. I am content to roast marshmallows over the fire under the stars. I lay on my back on a blanket and stare into space. The sky feels bigger here and the stars are brighter. As I reflect back over the week, a sense of peace comes over me. I am happy. Does the week have to end? “Please let us stay another week Mom!”
The past two summers brought changes at the lake cabin. Both grandparents became ill and passed away this fall. I am unsure of the emotions I will experience next summer, but I feel certain that contentment will remain. The presence of my grandparents, the love and the memories we shared at the lake cabin will always hold a special place in my heart. For that reason, I will forever be perfectly content at the

At night in the summertime it is even more peaceful and the scents and air are different. The air feels warm yet breezy and filled with the scent of pine trees and bark. The water feels a bit warmer because the sun has been beating on it all day. You can’t really see anything below you, and that’s what makes it awesome because it creates a sense of curiosity, but a bit freaky at the same time. Laying on my back in the water and looking up at the stars and the moon, is just a pretty sight.…

Hurriedly, I buckled my seatbelt, placed in my keys in the ignition, and adjusted my rear view mirror. It was then, I caught a glimpse of the Victorian mansion across the street. I had almost forgotten about the arrangement I had grudgingly accepted to help clean the attic. But after a quick scan of my surroundings, I quickly realized the vicinity was absent of any dump truck. So maybe they forgot, I shrugged, hoping this piece of logic would justify my actions.…

When I was ten years old, I moved to West Texas. I loved swimming in the lakes and ponds around my home before, so I was disappointed when I found out that there was only one body of water near my new home. This “lake” (about the size of a football field) was called Clearwater Lake. It took about an hour’s time to drive there. The first time my family drove over there, I was amazed by how many people there were, all the cars packed liked sardines, the people moving so slowly it was like molasses.…

When I was about 3 years old, I can remember my Grandparents lake house in Houston, Texas. My parents and I lived there until my grandparents moved into the country 2 hours outside Houston. Before moving, I can remember my mother taking me out to the lake to feed the ducks and always telling me I can’t swim in the lake because it’s too dirty. I remember going into the kitchen to get juice and spilled it everywhere and was found cleaning my mess while cursing because I thought saying “Shit” and “God Damnit” would magically clean the mess. I would grab a stick of butter and sit 3 inches from the television while watching the Teletubbies.…
