With my circadian rhythm out of sync, the excitement of new adventures and exploring the island world. Kauai, Hawaii was my adventure and after visiting almost every beach on the island, I was still unsatisfied and need to see and experience more, a new goal to conquer.

Today would be filled with kayaking downstream in the Wailua River, to hike to Wailua Falls, and paddling upstream in the river. Stopping for a few scenic spots along the way to ensure seeing all of what the “Garden Island” has to offer.

With the Wailua River sitting in a valley between two mountains, to reach the kayak rental and dock, one must take

Having left the waterfall we stopped at a shallow area of the river with a cliff great for jumping off of nearby.

In about five steps from the gravel covered shallow end, I stepped onto a trail. My family sat patiently in their kayaks, waiting for me to make my ascend up to the top of the cliff, to then make my descent back down to the water.

Unknowing the depth of the water below, I cautiously watched the few jump before me. My dad followed me up the trail and was right behind me. This added comfort and support made what I was now nervous and anxious to do much easier. I advanced toward the edge of the cliff, then stopped, closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Coming up from the water I felt proud and accomplished.

The next adventure in my life is college; I might go far from home, but I want to explore and learn. I will have my family’s support, which means so much to me in this leap of faith into college, trusting something so monumental as determining my

Kneeling, I tore strips of cloth from my pants and wound them around my bare feet. I made each movement slowly and deliberately, trying to regain my composure. After a few moments, I stood and ran for the glimmering water in the distance. If I could make the river, I could float downstream to camp; if I made it to the river, I would live. As I sprinted into the distance, I heard a noise and I looked behind me.…

Close call on Current River In the small town of Popular Bluff, Missouri, sun was brightly shining down on this hot summer morning, making it the optimum day to go tubbing down Current River. That morning there were about eight of us going tubbing, my stepfather Larry, two uncles, an aunt, my sister, my two brothers and I. We loaded up the car with the essentials that would be needed; then we loaded up into two vehicles and headed for the river. When we finally arrived at the water’s edge my brother John and I were so excited, we basically leapt out of the car before it came to a complete stop.…

During our adventures, we were also fortunate to come across some nice people from other places that were doing the exact same thing. What we’ve learned from these people were that in order to get the full experience from geocaching, you must have an open mind and have the willingness and the patience to do this type of activity. They have told us that through the use of geocache, they’ve made the most out of their vacation because they’ve got to see things outside of the cliché vacation magazines the Tourism Association promote. Since a bunch of us are new to the island, geocaching gave us a chance to explore the islands and learn a lot about the Hawaiian culture we’re living in. It was an exciting adventure that we were able to experience because it was fun trying to find where the geocaches were hidden and once we were able to find it we were excited to see what was inside and all the people that also found it before…

“How much longer?” I groaned out to my dad while wiping the sweat off my brow caused by the blistering heat of the mid-day sun. We were hiking up the Arizona Trail in the Grand Canyon for almost two hours. My brother and cousin were running up ahead, trying to race each other to the top of the 13-mile trail. My dad kept yelling at the two of them to slow down and wait for us. I knew the three of them wanted to go faster but kept having to wait for me.…

It was a gloomy day. I was at our Subdivision’s Local Beach getting ready to swim out to the raft with my four friends. When my friends arrived we dove into the shallow end of the beach and acquainted our bodies with the cold, late Summer temperature.…

Hawaii would be a rather uncomfortable place to live by the end of this century. The number of tropical storms striking the archipelago, which is the strip of water containing the islands that make up Hawaii, is expected to rise in the Pacific. When climate change increases significantly, researchers from Japan, China and Hawaii have calculated an increase in the number of cyclones reaching the shores. On average an extra one or two cyclones per year are projected to affect Hawaii, as opposed to previous years when surface temperature as a whole was a few degrees cooler. “Significant and robust changes in large-scale environmental conditions strengthen in situ (the original place) tropical cyclone activity in the subtropical central Pacific.…
