My mother was well known in a rural town in Mexico. I remember being selected at six years old to try on a special dress for the annual parade, which meant I would symbolize Virgin Mary. When I was given the role, I felt a great deal of responsibility to do everything correctly. As my float drove through the main streets, I carried the heavy doll by using every fiber in my being hold my arm up; I could tell the symbolism behind the doll I was carrying meant a lot to my community, and I did not want to let them down.
It all started when my mom took me to an old shop in town to see if the dress would fit me. The dress was unlike anything I had ever seen. It was a triangle like shaped dress, it was a light creme color, and it had real gold trimming

As soon as the music behind my float started playing, people began cheering. The music was loud composed of tubas, clarinets, trombones, trumpets, and a large bass drum with a cymbal on top. Next to the band, there was the image of virgin mary that is in the town’s largest church. It was being carried by four men and they where each holding a piece of the wood stand on their shoulder. As they waltzed their way through the parade, people would come near it and some began to cry. I did not understand why it would upset people at the time, but now I realize it was a symbol of hope for many that have prayed for miracles. Being part of this parade allowed me to develop a heightened awareness and perspective of the community I was in. I realized how united my community was and the hope they instilled in their religion. The Chicano Park day was eventful because of the community getting together to celebrate the culture and park. It was impressive to see the amount of people that attended the event and how diverse, especially because of the community it is located in I expected it to be particularly the neighbors. In association to the news and the elections, it is important to see the amount of support that the Mexican culture is receiving and together they can withstand anything. On my walk to the park I noticed that it was going to be crowded because of there not being any parking so we had to park down at the trolley station. This is my first time down there for this event, it was impressive because I would have never thought that due to the amount of people…

For my community event I went to the Romero Theater Troupe’s presentation of Thoughts on Regime Change & Other Acts of Resistance at Regis University on February 25th. This event was heavily focused on immigration and included actual stories from immigrants and their families as well as other stories that discussed critical issues in our society today. From this event I feel like I learned a ton about how immigration can affect families and how hard it can be to come to this country. Many of the stories were something that I could never relate to due to my own circumstances so it was very interesting to be able to see how people feel and how they are treated as immigrants. I feel like I really learned a lot from the Lopez family’s performance…

It says in the book of acts that "and they said, believe on the lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, And thy house" (act 16:31, KJV). Looking back on my passed five years of knowing Jesus I would describe it as a rollercoaster ride. Back in sixith grade I was going through a transition from Crosswalk to Hang time, Elementary School to middle school, and ultimately finding who I was and knowing Jesus. It was my 2011 Hangtime Winter Whiteout when I accepted Jesus into my life. Every year we do this thing called " Cry Night " that Winter Whiteout in particular we watched clips from "The Passion of Christ " and it was to the song " How He Loves " by David Crowder.…

There are many stories told in my family. Anyone and everyone told them, some nights it would be my mom and other nights it would be my grandpa. There would always be two stories read; the first one would be from a book called “My Book of Bible Stories”. This book has so many pictures asks questions has descriptive words and is still one of my favorite books. After that story whoever was telling the story would make up a silly story usually about a blue or green man with a giraffe that went traveling and exploring (I have no clue why).…

Seeing people together, just how it was in CicLAvia where there was no discrimination nor hate. Witnessing that is rare to witness and cherish that moment. In our class, Chicanos Studies, we learn about how people in the past hated and discriminated each other and is still going on today. People in the event were nice and were not judging anyone on what they were wearing while riding a bike. They were many weird things we saw in the event like an almost naked man sing on the bridge, yet people were not yelling at the man.…

My race is American Indian and my ethnicity is Hispanic, and both of my parents are from Michoacan, Mexico, while I was born in the United States. There are many symbols that can represent my race and ethnicity, but the one that represents it the most is my quinceñera dress. A quinceñera dress is not just any regular dress, it is a representation of a young girl turning into a young woman in my culture. Every young woman’s dress is made to fit their style, which means every quince dress is different unless they order it from a catalog, and don’t get it customized to suit their style. I got my dress custom made just for me in Tulare, California which is around three hours away from where I live, Salinas, California.…
