Academic Convocation Center Descriptive Essay

The Alice P. McDermott Academic Convocation Center is a gym at the center of the athletic department that is easily dismissed by the large amounts of people that pass by it on a daily basis. It’s a path that many students who live in the dorms on the hill, students and employees who park in the garage, or students and employees who enter from 281 or Hildebrand take every day on their way to the main campus. Because it is disregarded by busy people, it is a bit harder to notice that during certain times the area is very quiet and peaceful. By sitting down and in the midst of the action, it’s easy to analyze the sights, sounds, and smells that occur when all is hectic and when all is still. Every direction is a different sight filled with its own action. To the right there’s the football field, Benson Stadium, in clear view with its bright green, nourished grass; the …show more content…
Initially, the breeze that occasionally passes through has such a refreshing, clean, scent, but is interrupted by the harsh stench of gasoline from ongoing traffic. There are many smells juxtaposing this freshness which range from the hardy fried foods and tangy beverages certain observers have, or the synthetic scents others are concealed in. I would love the chance to attend The George Washington University and I believe my experience will benefit from the University Honors Program. Growing up in a minuscule town sheltered me immensely; the kids who will walk alongside me at graduation are the same kids I graduated preschool with. College campuses, with thousands of students, seem daunting and frightening. But, with the Honors Program’s class sizes capped at twenty students, courses will mimic my high school’s, where the teachers know your name, your story, and usually, your family. I will not simply be a number in the professors’ eyes if accepted to the Honors Program.…

INTRODUCTION Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been and are critical drivers of social mobility and social change in the Black community. Since their founding they have had missions to provide access and opportunity for Black people when they were excluded or denied admittance elsewhere. Today, HBCUs continue close the societal and economic gaps that exist for Black people in America. HBCUs represent just three percent of institutions of higher education, enroll less than ten percent of African Americans in higher education, but graduate more than 17 percent of African American bachelor degrees and more than 24 percent of African American bachelor degrees in STEM fields (NCES, 2016).…

On a sweltering summer day in the City of Atlanta or the “ATL” as it is affectionately known today, I visited my best friend while he visited his father for the summer. That day I remember vividly because as soon as we stepped outside of the airport to take the “MARTA” train, I began to sweat profusely. Anyone that has been to Atlanta during the summer knows it is incredibly humid there. A week earlier I had seen my friend, and we planned out what we were going to do that week I visited. I knew I wanted to visit Spellman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College, but before I could visit the Atlanta University Center or the “AUC” as it is called to the locals, I felt compelled to visit the grave site of one of the most influential human being to walk this earth.…

An event in my life that will influence my academic goals at CCU was the passing of my mother on 09/16/2015. She passed so suddenly that we weren’t prepared, neither mentally nor financially. We reached our goal and then some and it was just so inspiring, I felt God was with me and my siblings every step of the way.
