Personal Narrative: My Cabin, In Ericson, Nebraska

We all have that place to get away and be free. A retreat. My retreat is the cabin, in Ericson, Nebraska. At the cabin away from the people, away from the social media, a person can have fun, explore, and be free. There’s a lot of great activities at the cabin, and great activities usually create great memories. The cabin as a retreat gives a person the opportunity to catch up with their inner selves.
The cabin allows for the opportunity for life to slow down. I wake up when I want, I eat when I want, I go to bed when I want. There are no alarms nor schedules. Everyday changes to how I want it to be. I’m in control, I got this.
Stroll outside feel the cool grass on my bare feet and follow a simple nature trail. I gaze at the deer prancing across

There are multiple nature trails to go for a hike, back roads for walks, jogs and runs. The Cedar River goes right through the lake, making it available for many different activities. These events include canoeing, tubing, tanking, and kayaking. There’s a drop off spot under a bridge and a get out spot at one of the two campgrounds. Floating down the river itself could take a couple of hours, but you must include snack breaks, rest stops, and play breaks. Going down the river also includes the traditions. All newcomers, people who are experiencing their first time down the river, must lie in Big Springs. Big Springs is the biggest spring along the river and it is required that new comers lay in the ice cold water for ten seconds. Ten seconds have never felt so long before, once the time is up jump back in the river, it's a sauna. But if the opportunity to go down the river is not available there are other places to swim and play in the …show more content…
The Swimming Hole is not the only place to go swimming. If you have a dock or you have a friend that has a dock you can swim from there. Another place available for swimming is the dam, preferably below the dam. Although, while swimming down at the dam be sure to watch for fishermen and their pesky lures. Fishing is a very common activity to participate in. Fishing can take place at the boat dock, the handicap dock, a dock that you own or a friend is letting you borrow, and the most obvious, off of the banks and off of your boats, if you have one. If you’re skilled enough to catch any kind of turtle they can be put into the Ericson Turtle Races. Yes I know the turtle races sounds ridiculous, but they’re actually pretty fun and interesting. Turtles but into a ring and which ever ones makes it out first is the winners. Whoo Hoo. Plus, since it's kind of back to nature you can camp and tent, there are outhouses to

Last Fall my family visited Shenandoah National Park. It is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. It is only 75 miles outside of the nation’s capitol, Washington D.C. The first traces of humans on the land that would later become the park are estimated to be almost nine thousand years ago. Native Americans visited these Appalachian Mountains seasonally to hunt, collect nuts and berries, and to gather stone to construct tools.…

What I love most about Iron Mountain is you’re never too far away from the wilderness. I routinely have deer, rabbits, and other woodland critters in my yard, and it’s not uncommon to come across bears, coyotes, or even moose on the way to exams. Outside of work, there is no shortage of camping, boating, fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, hunting, and hiking opportunities. The Fumee Lake Natural Area, just outside of Iron Mountain, has miles of trails to enjoy scenic views, wild life and flowers.…

Minnesota, the "Land of 10,000 Lakes", actually boasts about 11,842 bodies of water that have an area over 10 acres. The relative concentration of lakes increases as you travel north with what might typically be considered the beginning of "lake country" starting on an imaginary line drawn through the center of the state stretching from Alexandria to the west to the famous Lake Mille Lacs to the east. If you came to this page looking for information to help you plan a Minnesota fishing getaway then I provide you with some helpful tips further down. Anglers looking for good fishing opportunities in Minnesota are typically drawn to the more famous larger lakes and the species of choice is most often walleye. Walleye fishing is a Minnesota tradition that stretches across generations.…

With the windows down, the crisp, cool summer air permeated throughout my body, acquiring every hair to stand at attention. Buffalo surrounded and granged lazily through the corn fields that shot high to the sky, as if every row was assembled soldiers getting ready to march. South Dakota is known for open fields with a consumed, laid back lifestyle with not much ever going on. Going into the trip knowing this, I was not in the least bit excited. It was when I absorbed the laid back atmosphere and appreciated every single bit of their way of life.…

Throughout the course of my short seventeen years, I have grown and learned many things. I grew up in a small rural town called Elk Creek. There are no strangers in Elk Creek; people sleep with their doors unlocked and their windows open. Everyone who has grown up in a small town can agree that friendship and community become a second nature trait. Although I have copious amounts of love and respect for where I grew up; I believe that I do not belong there.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

There’s a little slice of Heaven in Marshall, Texas, where the sun shines through the pines and the sound of cicadas serenade you throughout your afternoon and the lake shines like a plate of polished silver in the early morning sun. When I first came to Camp Fern, I was on my own. Everyone else had known each other for at least two years, so I was the odd one out. In my cabin there was the usual sort. There was the popular one, the attention seeker, the joker, and the one you love to hate.…

Right before sunset, my mother and I would head outside into our luxuriant garden that’s filled with sunflowers and roses. The smell of freshly baked cookies would fill into me as my mother places them onto the outdoor seating area. As we drink our tea, I would release all of the sorrows and problems I go through to my mother while examining the sky transform into beautiful orange and purple tones that hypnotize me to calm down and be more comfortable. The grass would catch my attention as it shines from the moonlight after being recently sprinkled with water. These beautiful sights make me realize how complex life is and that each thing is important for the growth of another, so the stress that I’m feeling would make me grow as a person.…
