Although Ishmael Beah was very fortunate to escape Sierra Leone, millions of other poor, innocent civilians were not lucky enough to flee their war-ravaged homeland. Similarly to the first two highlights, the next two passages work together to display the progression of damage that war takes on the country of Sierra Leone, specifically its capital city of Freetown. A passage from pages 146-152 clearly highlights Freetown as a busy, religious, and magnificent city filled with bustling streets of extravagant cars, tall buildings, countless mini-markets, cheery street vendors, and the enormous Cotton Tree, a historic landmark of Sierra Leone. By writing this passage, Beah strategically explains what Freetown meant to Sierra Leone, so he can later prove his main idea and reveal how war damaged and affected his home country and its capital city.…

I grew up in a place where the neighbors lived a mile away, the animals ran loose all the time, and if you really felt like it, you could walk outside naked and nobody could really see you. It was a small town where everybody knew everybody; when driving down the road, you knew who was in the car passing you, and by the off chance you didn't, you still waved anyways. Going to the local gas station for a soda or to fill up the truck turned into a trip to go see your friends and visit. The family lived right around the corner, and bonfires were a regular thing. "Sedgewickville Population: 173" is what the town's sign said.…

The night before, Confederate soldiers command Union soldiers to board a train at dusk. The next morning five hundred Union prisoners get on a train with absolutely no room. They stand for five days, which is exhausting, but is doable for the soldiers who think they are going home. There is excitement because they think there will be an exchange of soldiers between the North and the South. I cannot imagine the feeling when this reality is taken away from them.…

The poem “anyone lived in a pretty how town” by ee cummings describes the life of the residents of a small picturesque town, most notably the life of “anyone” and his female counterpart “noone”. “noone” and “anyone” are used by cummings to create a generalization of the main characters in order to tell many stories with one poem. The women and men of the town “cared for anyone not at all”, and instead “sowed their isn’t they reaped their same” (2). This line refers to the adults bearing and raising children because to “sow” means to plant and to “reap” is to harvest. By sowing and reaping the children to be “their same” the children are raised to be without individuality; in other words, they are all alike.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

My first stop in my journey was in the city of Xi’an, China.…

Many things can represent the city of Miami to people. To me however, from daytime to nighttime, South Beach best illustrates what makes Miami different from almost every other city: diversity. Everything, from the sounds, feelings and tastes, to the smells and sights, makes one feel as though you are standing at the crossroads to the rest of the world. As you approach South Beach, crossing over the ocean on I-395, you can already hear multiple styles of music playing in the distance.…
