When my parents chose my name, death was the only thing they had on their minds. My parents had not expected me to survive in the womb, or during delivery, or even the few weeks after my birth. I was a small, frail baby who my parents deemed a miracle, thus they named me Apoorva: a name that means rare and precious. The name Apoorva is a name that fits me with regard to my personality, but not in accordance with my physical traits."
According to namesmeaningdictioniary.com, Apurva [an alternative spelling] means “unique, never before, unpreceded” in the ancient language of Sanskrit. I am the opposite in all regards; I am an identical twin. My sister and I were once a single embryo that then split into two. We share the same DNA, the one defining

Exquisite refers to a person or thing that is beautiful, flawless, and delicate. I, however, am the opposite: a clumsy and awkward sixteen-year-old. I am often prone to tripping on air and stumbling while walking. When I walk up on school stairs, I have to be extremely careful as I have almost slipped many times, even on occasions where the stairs had no lubricants. A few weeks ago, my mother’s friend made my mother a cake for her birthday; I was not hungry at the time, so I waited until the next the day to eat it. In the process of removing the remaining slice from the refrigerator, I accidentally caused not only the cake but all the containers near it to fall. To make the matter worse, in the process of trying to salvage the wreckage, I knocked over a bottle of apple cider. I am clumsy even when I try not be, it is a natural part of me. In this way, the name Apoorva does is contrary to who I really …show more content…
This is very accurate. Listening to music and reading are two of my most favorite hobbies. To those that know me, they know how much I value my headphones and my books. My headphones are one of my most prized possessions and I often carry them with me. I listen to music in most of the places that I go to: in the car, at school, and at home. To this day I have only let my sister borrow them, and only after much pleading. I am as passionate about reading as I am about music. I do not think that since elementary school, I have been able to withstand more than two weeks without reading at a time. During sophomore year, I went to the library with the intention to study for finals, albeit, I could not resist the sweet temptation of books, yet to be explored. I told myself I would only browse through a few shelves to hopefully find books for future use; however, I failed miserably. I picked up a book intending to read only few pages, but a few pages turned into a chapter and one chapter turned into another until eventually, I finished the entire book. In this case, the name Apoorva matches who I

The first memory most people have of learning to read is a lighthearted and comforting memory. Most of us might not even remember the exact time, or what we read when we first learned to read. However, as most of us will be unable to relate to the following two authors, who both had hardship and serious internal struggles while trying to master what most would consider a necessity to function in society. In “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” Sherman Alexie begins sharing his experiences as a young and motivated reader.…

When I entered the education landscape, I was foreign to the ideas and the nature of those that saw themselves as something more than just a student. I never thought that those students that sat behind the deteriorating desks could educate themselves. Ergo, as I transferred from middle school to high school, I began to discover those students that were seen as insignificant if I wanted to succeed within what was previously taught to me as the “real world”. Yet, it was through those encounters with those strange and unique individuals where I was exposed to something pure. I remember the first time I was ever exposed to music as an educational structure for me to discover myself in.…

In this quote, Ashima and Ashoke are still awaiting the arrival of their firstborn son, and the reader is given a glimpse into their relationship when Ashima calls to her husband without using his name. This is a product of tradition, since the name is considered an intimate aspect of a romantic relationship—the novel's first hint of the importance of naming in Indian culture. Ashima is devoted to tradition, and to "propriety," wary of the customs of the country that she has entered into, where first names are used indiscriminately. There is a gentle, humble quality to the phrase she uses in place of Ashoke's name, but it is still a strikingly formal phrase, from an American standpoint. Ashima and Ashoke had an arranged marriage, and at this…

To be honest I don't remember learning to read. It just seems like I've always known how to. I don't remember the struggle and determination little kids have trying to pronounce words that I can say with just a snap of my finger. It seems like reading is something I've always known how to do. If it's something I've known for awhile why don't I engage in this activity more?…

I graduated from kindergarten as a non-reader. I was the eldest child in my family with two younger siblings. She recounts how she was shocked and concerned when she found out that all of her friend’s children were already reading. She would tell you that I had not a sight word in my wheelhouse.…

As a beginning reader young adult books captivated me with what, at the time, were intriguing and comprehensible plot lines. Thus began my love affair with books. Eventually, those plot lines became my adversary, when their simplicity triggered a soporific rendition of the book. It persisted until the gifts of classical literature unwrapped as I learned to penetrate, explore, and discover meanings in, for example, Dickens’ lengthy description of a clock tower did I truly find my beloved. Although young adult books had their place in my life by inspiring a love for reading, classical literature has opened up a whole new perspective, teaching me to seek out knowledge while still yielding enjoyment as I consume each book.…
