“Una vida en Barcelona”: A Life in Barcelona In the “City of Counts,” residents get to enjoy the stunning beaches of the Mediterranean while also admiring the breathtaking views of the Mountains of Montserrat! Unlike other Spanish cities such as Madrid, Barcelona is heavily influenced by Catalonian culture and cuisine with Catalan even being an official language. Not to mention, this cosmopolitan Spanish city dates back to ancient Roman times! With its historic architecture, rich culture, perfect weather, and amazing cuisine; Barcelona is my ideal city to live in. Originally, Barcelona’s name was Barcino, a settlement founded by the Carthaginians in 200’s B.C. The city, later developed by the Romans and briefly ruled by the Moors, eventually achieved independence in the 11th century under the counts of Barcelona (“Scholastic Grolier Online”). Now, the second-largest city in Spain, Barcelona holds a population of approximately 1.6 million residents. Located on a narrow coastal plain in the Mediterranean, Barcelona’s physical beauty is both diverse and unique due to its seaport access and mountainous regions. Certainly, moving to any city near or far is a decision in which both sides should be evaluated, however, Barcelona’s pros far outweigh its cons. This city has everything to offer, from its cobblestone streets to Gothic architecture, history remains present in the capital of Catalonia. Next to perfect, is the weather and scenery in Barcelona. Minutes away from the Mediterranean coast, a bustling workday in the city can become a relaxing getaway at the beach.
