Decent Essays
The Smithsonian National Zoo is a large Zoo filled with many different areas and animals, each unique in their own way. Reading the volunteering camp description I hope to experience interacting with many different types of personalities visitors, children and people from all walks of life. I also hope to leave with a better understanding of the different areas of the Smithsonian, working and teaching children about the Smithsonian and helping children learn more about animals and their habitat. Knowing the park is 163 acres; I am looking forward to doing a lot of walking which is something that is very enjoyable for me. Also knowing that there will be children I can help answer any questions they may have and making crafts and much more. I

Orangutans are somewhat solitary species but to some degree as also somewhat social. Flanged adult male orangutans are the most solitary of all orangutans with their participation in social activity limited to short sexual encounters with adults or sub adult females; however, there were none of these at the zoo. Male orangutans normally do not even play a role in the upbringing of their offspring. Females do associate with their offspring and they have a relationship that lasts for many years sometimes being carried by their mother until the age of five and even being breastfed until the age of eight; however, the young’s time spent with other orangutans is brief. Offspring typically remain close to their mother until ten years of age, and…

Primates in zoos are an excellent example of how offsprings look up to their mother, they follow their to look for guidance on how to survive, Yet the zoo provides food, shelter, and in general a good and safe environment. However if those offsprings or primates were to be released in their natural natural habitat the chances of them to survive are close to none. This is due to them never being teached how to protect themselves from predators. Also their chances for their will be minimal since they were never taught how to gather their food, since the zoo always provided them a meal with no difficulties.…

After our trip to the zoo, we were given a tour of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This tour was customized to fit what we are attempting to understand as a class. We learned about the history of animals within art, not just in modern days, but throughout history. After this tour that gave us a lot of knowledge about the depiction and symbolism of animals, we were given the task to find 3 pieces of art that “spoke to us” and describe our reaction to these works. To me there were many pieces of art that spoke to me but out of the five the three that I chose were the ones where animals were seen as a figure of humanity's success.…

Panda are a big ticket item in all zoos. Pandas bring prestige and fame to a zoo. What most people don’t know though, is that fame and prestige cost a lot of money. For each panda that a zoo has, it cost them one million dollars per year plus another six hundred thousand dollars every time a cub is born. On top of that, the money that the zoos make annually is not enough to cover the cost of the pandas (Washington Post 2).…
