Reflection On Clinical Experience

Improved Essays
Description of the Clinical Experience The purpose of this reflection is to inform the reader of my second and third day in the hospital, where we went out on the floor and interacted with our clients. We got to meet our clients and experience some of the tasks the register nurses do on a daily basis (#C6, #C10).
Reflection
Initially, on both days my group met in the lobby of the hospital and then followed our instructor to the third floor, where we would wait for the nurses to give shift report. My partner and myself; frantically scribbled everything down, as the nurses spoke quickly and gave an abundance of information. As my partner and I compared notes with each other, helping each other accomplish our goals. We introduce ourselves to

I gave insulin shots and performed Accu-Chek. I also got to document in the electronic health record.
Influencing Factors Before going into clinical, I had went to the hospital the day prior to look up my client’s information, including; the lab values, vital signs, diagnoses, and medications to gather information to understand their disease processes and what the medications were used for. Other influencing factors included the textbooks and Pepid. Clinical is hands on and allows us to practice the various skills, like administering the medications and practicing with barcode, we have have been learning (#C1).
Evaluation - Alternative strategies Alternative strategies would be to be more prepared, by actually setting time aside to gather information about the medications. I could also look up the disease processes and understand what my client is actually going through. I should also not let my schoolwork interfere for my time allotted for the clinical and my

Competency # 6 - Exhibits Caring to Facilitate Holistic Well-Being for Recipients of Nursing Care: I met this competency by acknowledging my weaknesses and areas of improvement. I want my clients to know they are in safe hands, I can do this by improving my syringe, and needle withdraws and mental math through continuous practice.
Competency # 7 – Uses Effective Communication Skills: Nursing students like myself, must be able to communicate with not only their client, but also all their coworkers.
Competency # 10 – Demonstrates Professional Behaviors: I must comply with the rules and regulations set forth by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). I honored this code and performed professionally by concealing the identity of my classmates and my instructors. A professional in the nursing world conceals their patients’ rights of confidentiality and to know exactly why, what, when, and how I am going to perform a procedure and what to expect. I demonstrated competency #10 by following the University of NC at Pembroke’s and Nursing Department policies. I came to clinical dressed according to policy requirement and was at lab on time with my hair up and identification

I will be using Driscoll (2007) reflection model as I believe it will enable me to expand my knowledge whilst gaining experience and maximis my learning opportunities. This model consists of 3 main stages which are; what: discribing the details of the situation, so what: evaluating and analysing what happened and why it was important and now what: identifying what I have learnt and what action will be taken in the future, as well as identifying areas of new skill development and learning. I will be on a reflecting mainly on the morning l assised a patient…

There are several other strategies that have been proposed for improving clinical practice. For example, Horn and colleagues discussed clinical practice improvement (CPI) as a “multidimensional outcomes methodology that has direct application to the clinical management of individual patients”33 (p. 160). CPI, an approach lead by clinicians that attempts a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of health care delivery, uses a team, determines a purpose, collects data, assesses findings, and then translates those findings into practice changes.…

It was also a chance to analyse and recognise anything that needed to change in order to improve the quality of care provided. One particular reflection produced the opportunity to reflect on confidence. This was an area that had grown considerably within personal care. The reflection process helps to deepen the understanding of the fundamental aspect of building a relationship with the patient; this is something that should not be underestimated like it is by many student nurses as discussed in Bower (2009). An aspect that was identified during reflecting that needed developing was communication with the patient when engaging in personal care, the NMC (2015) states that in order to practice effectively and provide dignity in care you must be able to communicate clearly.…

This reflective piece focused on the patient care delivery that I was directly involved during my third-year clinical placement in a recovery unit of a local National Health Service (NHS) Trust. Driscoll reflective model would be used in the analysis of this care episode. My rationale for selecting Driscoll`s reflective model is because of the three-prompt questions (What? So what? and Now what?) generates a more, important reflective development by inspiring a much deeper analysis that causes for the future action plan…

The Role of Nursing It is said that the nursing profession is one of the most respected and trusted careers there are. From the beginning, a nurse’s role was to nurture and mend those that are sick, frail and even through the process of end of life, but it doesn’t just stop there. Nursing has come a long way and entails many more aspects than they are even given credit for. A nurse wears many hats and is required to perform duties outside of healing obvious wounds.…
