Description of Leader

Tony Hsieh is the CEO of Zappos. He is a good example of a great leader. We describe his life and how he got to be the CEO of Zappos, the online shoe company. He graduated from Harvard in 1995. He earned a degree in computer science. He later secured a job with Oracle but after a short amount of time he found himself dissatisfied with the corporate world and quit. He then co-founded LinkExchange with a college friend. LinkExchange became very successful as an advertising network. Hsieh sold LinkExchange to “Microsoft for $265 million when he was 24” ("Zappos founder Tony Hsieh enjoys the good life", 2011). He then co-founded Venture Frogs which was an investment firm. Venture Frogs invested in a variety of tech and Internet startups including Ask Jeeves, OpenTable, and Zappos. Hsieh was at first skeptical in investing in Zappos and didn’t know about the idea of selling shoes online. But two months later, Hsieh believed in it so much that he didn’t just invest in it but joined Zappos as the CEO.
He has turned “Zappos into the largest seller of shoes online” ("Zappos founder Tony Hsieh enjoys the good life", 2011). The work that was done was very impressive by increasing sales dramatically in just eight short years. “Under his leadership, Zappos has grown gross merchandise sales from $1.6M in 2000 to over $1 billion in 2008 by focusing relentlessly on customer service” (Dunlop, 2012). Amazon would later acquire Zappos in a deal valued at $1.2 billion.…
