The term “Whisky” comes from the Gaelic Uisge beatha meaning “water of life”. More specifically, “Scotch Whisky means that the whisky was produced in Scotland. It is Whisky that is distilled at a distillery in Scotland from water and malted barley”(The Scotch Whisky Regulations, 2009).This definition is only a simplified version of what scotch whisky is legally defined as. Then the soluble starch is converted into a sugary liquid known as wort. Once most of it has turned into a sugary liquid it is taken out of the mash tun to begin the cooling process. Once the wort is cool the fermentation process begins. The wort is put into large vessels where yeast can be added to it. Any living yeast attacks the sugar in the wort and it changes into crude alcohol. . The liquid that is then produced is called a wash, which contains alcohol of low strength. The fermentation process takes 48 hours. After the 48 hours with large copper pot stills malt whisky is then distilled twice. The wash from the fermentation process is heated up so that the alcohol can become a vapor. The still rises up and passes into the cooling plant so it can be condensed into a liquid state. The fist set of distillation is for the alcohol to be separated from the fermented liquid to get rid of the residue of yeast and any unfermented matter.
