Successful Self-Directed Learner

The learning environment presented by University of the People [UoPeople] requires an independent student capable of digesting and integrating information effectively without a great amount out of guidance in order to complete the requirements of a given course. The student most successful in this process is a self-directed, intrinsically motivated, active learner. When describing the features that characterize this type of student, there are many aspects to consider. Because each student is unique in their own inherent strengths and weaknesses in applying these characteristics, it is important to be able to identify them and implement strategies for development. “1. Takes initiative” (para. 2). Taking initiative and being self-directed are synonymous; thus, this characteristic is the vital first step. One cannot embody any of the characteristics of a self-directed learner without first being capable of taking initiative. A self-directed student does not procrastinate while depending on being instructed to learn (Cobb, 2013) “2. Is comfortable with independence” (para. 3). A self-directed learner is confident when expected to achieve on their own (Cobb, 2013) Through this comfort in self-reliance, the student is not debilitated by anxiety, fear, or a lack of direction due to an absence of external guidance or supervision. “3. Is persistent” (para. 4). A self-directed learner shows a willingness to put in whatever effort it takes to be successful regardless of the amount of time or practice the task requires (Cobb, 2013).
