Effective communication between healthcare practitioners and patients is very important for delivering high quality healthcare and safe patient care. Failures in communication are an extremely common cause that leads to poor patient outcome and even harm patients inadvertently. Effective communication can make patients feel secured to disclose their health condition to healthcare practitioners, thus it is able to enhance the quality of healthcare services and contribute towards better long-term health outcomes. Some examples of healthcare practitioners are doctors, nurses, dieticians, nutritionists and physiotherapists. According to Transformative Education for Health Professionals, healthcare practitioners maintain health in humans through the application of the principles and procedures of evidence-based medicine and caring. They study, diagnose, treat and prevent human illness, injury and other physical and mental impairments in accordance with the needs of the populations they serve. They also advise on or apply preventive and curative measures, and promote health with the ultimate goal of meeting the health needs and expectations of individuals and populations, and improving population health outcomes.

Communication skills are very important in effective communication because it impacts the treatment received by patients. These skills help both healthcare practitioners and patients to understand and learn from each other, develop alternate perspectives, and meet each other's needs.
