I am a first-generation college student and I come from a low-income family. Obtaining a higher education has always been a challenge for me. I grew up in a small town in the middle of nowhere in Northeast California. My family owns a donut shop and business has been slow so my parents are struggling a bit as they are sending me to college. Nonetheless, I was able to help my parents pay for some things, such as rent and other expenses because over the summer of 2014, I was offered an engineering internship. This internship influenced my career path. I discovered that I wanted to pursue an engineering degree. In addition, I went to a small high school and since there were less than 500 students in our entire school, we were never offered any …show more content…
Thus, they did not provide me much help during my academic journey. The process of applying to college was an extreme struggle for me. I was the first one to go to college in my family and there was no one to guide me through that process. It was a struggle trying to learn on your own about the different applications to each college and the examinations that you may need to take. Also the process of applying for federal grant and scholarships remain a challenge as well. With the guidance of my teacher and counselor, I was able to understand the college application a bit more as well as to decide which college I will be attending. My determination of picking engineering as a major to pursue is highly influenced by my internship. Also, with this major I feel stable and able to help my parents back. Since I was involved with my high school, I wanted to be involved on campus as well. I want to be a well-rounded person and learn a little more other than academics. My parents have shared their struggles with me, thus I want to pay them back after all they have done for me. I overcame these obstacles by outreaching to people and talking to my counselor and
