1. Describe the War of 1812 by explaining the events leading to war, the rise of nationalism, the Battle of New Orleans and terms of the peace treaty.
The War of 1812 resulted after Americans were angered over trading issues, impressment of American sailors and the encouragement by British of Indians attacking American settlers on the western frontier, the British had even supplied the Indians with guns. In November of 1811, The Battle of Tippecanoe took place. Lead by Gov. William Henry Harrison, American forces attacked the Shawnee. An angered president at the time, James Madison, was willing to go to war. He thought it would be a quick war since Great Britain was occupied with battling Napoleon on the Continent. …show more content…
In June of 1812 President Madison asked congress for declaration of War. The War lasted for two and a half years. On December 24th, 1814. The Treaty of Ghent was signed and the War of 1812 ended. Although the war was not truly won by either party and no territory was gained or lost, Nationalism was reflected post-war for Americans. The war gave the United States a National Identity. It proved to the British that the US could hold their own despite the low number of militants. Two weeks after the Treaty of Ghent was signed, word had not reached the British yet of the peace agreement. The British marched against New Orleans, with hope of capturing the city and separating Louisiana from the rest of the US. Pirate Jean Lafitte warned the US of the pending attack. By the time the British reached the Rodriquez canal, Andrew Jackson had firmly established US defenses made up of 4,500 troops.
