The Odyssey by Homer holds many symbols and ideas that sink the story further into itself but, one of the most prominent symbols is the the Odysseus’s bow. This weapon, given to the hero in his travels as a prince, presents a key to further understanding the depth of the epic. The bow is used to symbolize the hero’s relationship with Penelope, the will of Odysseus, and irony of the suitor’s peril. Even though they are written by the same author, they still handle and use this in different ways to help support the deeper meanings and show a life lesson that can be used every single day for a person of any age. Calamity, the last book in the series but also the best at helping the theme and claim, has a lot of hidden meaning behind the pages. Edgar Allen Poe is an American writer that is world renown for his dark writing style, which allows the reader to be engulfed into his tales of horror and mystery. The Cask of Amontillado is a classic Poe style story that is littered with unexpected twists and turns around every corner. The reader is able to watch from afar as the main character seeks revenge against his “friend” Fortunato. Poe’s ability to create a character like Montresor amazes me because of the unique way in which he reveals the main characters poor mental health without directly stating that he is insane. The gradual realization of this is what makes the story so unique to Poe’s style.…
