In Act 4 Scene 1, Lennox wants to appear loyal to Macbeth, because Lennox tells him that “Macduff is fled to England” (4.1.148). He also wants to gain information about Macbeth, because Lennox is waiting at the door before Macbeth calls him in, so Lennox might have been listening to Macbeth conversation before he got call in. He might of wanted more information about Macbeth to prepare for the inevitable civil war. Lennox’s objectives change in this scene from spying on Macbeth to trying to gain Macbeth’s trust.
